Read this first: why QLD police pay tables don't match the agreement

Queensland's real pay rates are not the ones printed in the agreement. Here's why, and where the official rates come from.

The QPS Certified Agreement 2025 prints pay rates for 3% from 1 July 2025, 2.5% from 1 July 2026 and 2.5% from 1 July 2027. But Schedule 6 adds a CPI Uplift Adjustment: if March Brisbane CPI beats the rise, the difference is added (up to 0.5% in year 1, then up to 1%), back-paid and compounded. The March 2026 CPI triggered the full 0.5%, so the July 2025 rise became 3.5%.

The rates on this page are QPS's official CUA schedule

QPS publishes the uplifted pay tables on its CPI Uplift Adjustment page (the Tranche 3 FAQ and visual aids). The 1 July 2025, 1 July 2026 and 1 July 2027 rates on this page are copied from that official schedule, read on 10 October 2026. Before we had it, we calculated the rates from the agreement's own rule (the 2025 fortnightly rate ÷ 1.03 × 1.035, rounded to 10 cents, then × 1.025 for 2026). Those figures matched the official schedule to within a few dollars and have now been replaced by QPS's own numbers.

Annual figures follow the agreement's convention: fortnightly rate × 365.25 ÷ 14. The 1 July 2026 rates are a minimum: a second uplift of up to 1% applies if the March 2027 Brisbane CPI exceeds 2.5%.

The uplift is worth about 0.49% on every point. For a First Year Constable it's $381 a year. Small, but it compounds into every later rise and it was back-paid from the July 2025 date, with back pay running from the pay fortnight of 24 June 2026 to about 5 August 2026.

QPS pay points 2026: constables and senior constables

Current rates from 1 July 2026, including the 2025 CPI uplift. Base salary only.

Queensland numbers its pay points by rank: 1.1 to 1.6 for Constable, 2.1 to 2.10 for Senior Constable. Senior Constable 2.10 is deemed Leading Senior Constable once the officer has the LCP or MDP qualification. Constable 1.6 and Senior Constable 2.1 pay the same.

The Constable scale climbs steeply: $14,036 separates 1.1 and 1.5. The Senior Constable points are closer together, between $2,223 and $2,593 apart, so the 21% OSA and the station you work at often matter more to a senior constable's income than the next point.

The step from the top of Senior Sergeant ($150,175) to Inspector 1 ($179,870) is about $29,695, but the double-time overtime rule covers non-commissioned officers, not commissioned ones. Inspectors on rotating shifts as Regional Duty Officers get a 12.5% allowance instead.

What a QLD police salary includes: base pay, then OSA

Queensland quotes base salary only. Unlike NSW or Victoria, nothing for weekends or shifts is folded into the figure. Instead, most front-line officers get the Operational Shift Allowance: 21% of base salary for officers in operational shift positions who take an equitable share of 2- or 3-shift rosters over 7 days.

What OSA gives you

  • ✓21% on top of base, every fortnight
  • ✓Paid on all paid leave except long service leave
  • ✓Keeps being paid during workers' compensation
  • ✓Night allowances (NOSA 20%, LNOSA 25%) still paid on top
  • ✓38 hours special leave if you work enough weekend and public holiday shifts

What OSA replaces or excludes

  • ✕Shift penalties and weekend penalties
  • ✕Public holiday penalty rates
  • ✕Annual leave loading
  • ✕Capped at 26 weeks on sick leave
  • ✕Not paid in day or non-operational roles

That's why the recruiting site quotes a figure about 21% higher than the pay table: it includes OSA. On today's rates a First Year Constable on an OSA roster earns about $94,991. OSA officers can be rostered for up to 56 weekend shifts and 7 public holiday shifts a year, which is the trade for the flat 21%.

In Queensland, the pay table is the floor. The 21% OSA, night allowances and double-time overtime are where front-line officers' real pay comes from.

The 1 July 2026 pay rise and what comes next

On 1 July 2026 every point rose 2.5% on top of the uplifted 2025 rate, an average of 2.50% in QPS's official CUA schedule. Including the 2025 uplift, a First Year Constable's base has risen from the agreement's printed $76,220 for July 2025 to $78,505 now.

QPS's official CUA schedule for 1 July 2027: today's rates plus 2.5%. Higher if a further CPI uplift applies in 2027 or 2028.

The two $4,000 General Duties retention payments are a big part of this deal for front-line officers: $8,000 over two years, pro rata for part-timers. They go to Constables to Senior Sergeants substantively in general duties roles, including officers in charge of stations and beats. They don't go to officers in the watchhouse, Road Policing, the Dog Squad, Water Police, investigative units and several other specialist areas, so check your role before you count on it.

For the full negotiation history and the ballot, see the QLD police pay deal page and the national pay deal tracker.

Recruit pay at the QPS Academy

Queensland recruits are paid while they train at Oxley (Brisbane) or Townsville, for a course of about eight months. The rule is 70% of the First Year Constable base, plus a $183 a fortnight recruit training allowance. QPS doesn't publish a single clear figure: its recruiting site gives two conflicting totals, about $53,700 and about $60,000.

Calculated by us from the published rule. Academy accommodation is free, and there are no fees for training or the pre-selection tests. Existing QPS civilian staff keep their pay point in training.

Experienced police from other forces join through the 20-week PACE course and are paid more than mainstream recruits from day one, with a $20,000 relocation incentive for interstate and overseas officers. The recruiting site says prior experience can lift First Year Constable pay to "up to $130k", which we haven't been able to confirm. See how to become a police officer in Queensland for the full process.

How fast you move up the QPS pay points

Clause 12 sets the rule: you move up a pay point after at least 12 months on each point, with a satisfactory development and performance (DAP) review and your compulsory training done. A few steps have extra conditions.

Conditions for moving up

  • ✓ 1.1 to 1.2: complete the First Year Constable Program
  • ✓ 1.5 to Senior Constable 2.1: 12 months on 1.5 plus training, performance report, vetting, driver licence and OST requirements
  • ✓ 2.10 to Leading Senior Constable: the LCP or MDP qualification
  • ✓ Sergeant and above: open merit selection; the qualification for Sergeant is the LCP or MDP equivalent
  • ✓ Hard-to-fill locations: an extra pay point after 12 months and another after 24 months if you stay 2 more years

At the minimum pace, a constable who starts at 1.1 reaches Senior Constable 2.1 in their sixth year and 2.10 about 14 years after swearing in (our calculation from the 12-month rule). That's a long ladder, which is why the hard-to-fill location deal (two extra pay points for staying on) is worth a serious look. The QLD police promotion guide covers the Sergeant process.

Overtime and night shifts in Queensland

Queensland's overtime rule is the most generous of the four big state forces. Non-commissioned officers who are operationally available and OST-qualified get double time for all overtime, in recognition of their "duty to act" (clause 26). Shift workers, detectives and plain clothes allowance recipients, general duties officers, Water Police and residential beat officers get double time regardless.

Queensland overtime and hours rules

  • ✓ Double time for NCOs who are operationally available and OST-qualified (cl 26).
  • ✓ Shift workers, Detective/Plain Clothes allowance recipients, General Duties officers, Water Police and residential beats get double time regardless.
  • ✓ Everyone else: time and a half for the first 3 hours, then double time; Sunday is all double time.
  • ✓ Minimum 3 hours on recall (Award cl 18.7(b)).
  • ✓ One and Two Officer Station Allowance (36.5%) replaces overtime for those officers (cl 42).
  • ✓ Rosters average 38 hours a week, at least 4 rest days a fortnight, no more than 10 consecutive shifts (cl 25.3); ordinary hours capped at 12 a day (cl 22); 10-hour break between shifts (cl 23).

For a First Year Constable, a double-time hour is worth about $79.19 (our estimate: base ÷ 26.09 fortnights ÷ 76 hours × 2).

Night shift allowances

The 2025 agreement improved night pay. OSA officers get the Night Operational Shift Allowance (NOSA) of 20% of base rate for shifts starting between 6pm and 2am, or the Late Night allowance (LNOSA) of 25% where 4 ordinary hours fall between 2am and 6am. Both are on top of OSA. For a First Year Constable that's about $63.35 for an 8-hour NOSA shift and $79.19 for an 8-hour LNOSA shift (our estimate).

Officers at one- and two-officer stations get a 36.5% allowance instead of overtime, on-call, shift, weekend and public holiday pay. Compare all forces on police overtime and penalty rates.

Every QLD police allowance, with amounts

Allowances that move with salaries also took the CPI uplift (Schedule 6, clause 10). The dollar figures below for the Detective, Plain Clothes, Area, Officer in Charge, SERT, EORT, Dive Squad, Dog Handler, Prosecutor, PolAir and Dignitary Protection allowances are QPS's official uplifted rates from its CUA schedule. On-call rates are still the agreement's printed figures. Percentage allowances follow your base salary automatically. The largest remote payment is the Area Allowance: $13,906 a year from July 2026 (official CUA rate) in 13 communities.

Remote and rural money in Queensland

The Rural Locality Incentive Payment pays $4,000, then $5,000, then $7,000 a year at about 40 designated rural towns, paid each January in arrears. It can't be combined with the Area Allowance. Add the hard-to-fill pay points and the right to name your next district after a rural tenure, and a rural posting can be worth a lot more than the table suggests.

Super: 18% from the employer

Queensland pays police 18% employer super on ordinary time earnings, the highest rate of any force we track, with no compulsory member contribution. New officers start on a default 6% member contribution, which they can reduce to zero. On a First Year Constable's base salary alone, 18% is about $14,131 a year, against $9,421 at the 12% Superannuation Guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a QLD police officer earn in 2026?

From 1 July 2026, base pay runs from $78,505 for a First Year Constable to $118,127 at Senior Constable 2.10 and $133,671 at Sergeant 3.7, on QPS's official CPI Uplift Adjustment schedule. Most front-line officers add the 21% Operational Shift Allowance, so a First Year Constable on shifts earns about $94,991.

What is the QPS First Year Constable salary?

$78,505 base from 1 July 2026, or about $94,991 with the 21% OSA. The recruiting site's $92,226 figure is the old pre-uplift 2025 base plus OSA. The agreement's printed 2026 rate is $78,124, but the 2026 CPI uplift lifted it. The rate quoted here is from QPS's official CUA schedule.

What is the QPS CPI uplift adjustment?

Schedule 6 of the QPS Certified Agreement 2025 compares each pay rise with March Brisbane CPI. If inflation is higher, the difference is added (capped at 0.5% in year 1 and 1% in years 2 and 3), back-paid and built into later rates. The March 2026 CPI triggered the full 0.5%, so the July 2025 rise became 3.5%.

Do Queensland police get paid during academy training?

Yes. Recruits are paid 70% of the First Year Constable base plus a $183 a fortnight recruit training allowance. On today's rates that's about $59,728 a year (our calculation). The recruiting site quotes two conflicting totals, about $53,700 and about $60,000. Academy accommodation is free.

What is the Operational Shift Allowance in Queensland?

OSA is 21% of base salary for officers in operational shift positions who take an equitable share of 2- or 3-shift rosters over 7 days. It replaces shift and weekend penalties, public holiday rates and annual leave loading. It is paid on all paid leave except long service leave, and keeps being paid during workers' compensation.

Do Queensland police get double time for overtime?

Yes, if you're a non-commissioned officer who is operationally available and OST-qualified, plus shift workers, detectives, plain clothes, general duties, Water Police and beat officers. That's unusual nationally. Other officers get time and a half for the first 3 hours, then double time, with Sundays all double time.

How much super do QLD police get?

18% of ordinary time earnings from the employer since 1 July 2023, with no compulsory member contribution. New officers start on a default 6% member contribution they can reduce to zero. On a First Year Constable's base alone, 18% is about $14,131 a year.

When is the next QLD police pay rise?

The agreement gives another 2.5% from 1 July 2027, which takes First Year Constable base to $80,467 on QPS's official schedule (before any further CPI uplift). Before that, the March 2027 Brisbane CPI could add up to 1% to the July 2026 rise, back-paid. A second $4,000 general duties retention payment is due on 31 January 2027.
