WA Police pay scale 2026: recruits to Senior Constable
Clause 10.1 of the 2024 Agreement, from 1 July 2026. Base salaries.
WA has three constable ranks before Sergeant. You start as a Recruit-in-Training, become a Constable (a probationary constable in years 1 and 2), then First Class Constable, then Senior Constable. Each rank above Constable has a base rate plus increments.

The Constable 1st and 2nd year rates are the same, so your first pay rise comes from completing probation, which moves you to the 3rd-year rate of $97,542. The step to First Class Constable at about 5 years is worth $5,714.
Sergeants, officers in charge and commissioned officers
WA's sergeant pay takes some untangling. Besides the base Sergeant and Senior Sergeant scales, the agreement has separate scales for officers in charge (OICs) of metropolitan and country stations, by category, plus grandfathered Category A, B and C Sergeant scales for officers who were already on them.

What a WA Police salary includes
For Constable to Senior Sergeant, the figure is base salary only. Nothing for shifts or weekends is folded in. Instead WA pays a flat dollar allowance for each weekend day, afternoon, evening or night shift you work, and overtime separately. There's no percentage loading like NSW's 11.5% or Queensland's 21% OSA.
How WA's flat-dollar model helps
- ✓Junior officers get the same dollars per shift as senior officers, so shifts are worth relatively more early on
- ✓You can see exactly what each shift is worth
- ✓Base salary is relatively high for a first-year constable
Where it costs you
- ✕Pay rises and falls with your roster
- ✕No public holiday penalty rate found in the agreement
- ✕Allowances aren't a percentage, so they rise only when the agreement changes them
Commissioned officers and Schedule H OICs are the exception: their salary includes an allowance for extra hours. So when comparing a WA Inspector's $173,361 with another force, remember it already covers weekends and long hours.
How much WA Police pay rose on 1 July 2026
The 1 July 2026 increase of 3.75% was the third and last under the 2024 Agreement. Across every point in the table it averaged 3.75%. Over the three years the rises were 5%, 4% and 3.75%, which compound to 13.30%; the deal was announced as 12.75% over 3 years. A probationary constable has gone from $83,544 under the 2022 rates to $94,651 now.

The 2024 deal also gave what the government called the largest increase in police shift allowances in more than 20 years. The night shift allowance, for example, went from $117.28 in July 2024 to $126.56 now.
When is the next WA Police pay rise?
No increase is scheduled. The agreement expires on 30 June 2027, and the next deal will be made under new wages rules.

Back pay is not guaranteed next time
The Public Sector Wages Policy Statement 2026 (26 May 2026) applies to WA Police agreements. It sets no fixed percentage cap, but new agreements apply from registration, and the government only "may consider" back-dating to the previous expiry. If the next agreement is registered late, the gap may not be back-paid.
What happens to your pay in the meantime? Clause 4 says the agreement continues in force after 30 June 2027 until it's replaced or withdrawn, so the 1 July 2026 rates keep being paid. They just stop rising. The 2024 Agreement itself was only settled when the WA Police Union board accepted the government's third offer in December 2024, then registered in May 2025 with the increases back-dated to July 2024. Under the 2026 policy, back-dating like that is at the government's discretion.
Follow the negotiations on our WA Police pay deal page, or compare every force's timing on the pay deal tracker.
Recruit pay at the WA Police Academy
WA pays recruits well. The Recruit-in-Training rate is $74,309 from 1 July 2026, the 2nd-highest recruit rate of the eight forces on our figures (NSW pays no recruit salary). The entry-level course at the Joondalup Academy, 30 km north of Perth, runs for 28 weeks, followed by 18 months as a probationary constable.

Regional recruits get free on-site accommodation during Academy training and can ask to be placed in their home district for their first 4 to 6 years. Final-stage recruitment costs, such as the medical and fingerprints, are reimbursed.
Experienced officers from the UK, Ireland and New Zealand can join through the international transition route. You need more than 2 years 8 months' operational service with probation complete, a break in service of no more than 18 months, and to be under 55 at visa nomination.
Service of 3 to 5 years is recognised as Constable 2nd to 5th year; 5 years or more puts you on the 5th-year rate and makes you eligible to test for First Class or Senior Constable. A maximum of 9 years is recognised. See UK police officers moving to Australia and how to become a police officer in WA.
WA Police increments: every two years
WA's progression is slower than in NSW, Victoria and Queensland, where steps come yearly. Within a rank, you move up one increment after each 2 years' satisfactory service (clause 10.2(a)), not every year. Constables follow a year-of-service scale instead, with one twist: you move to the 3rd-year rate when you finish probation, but you still need 3 years' service before the 4th-year rate.
- 1
Constable, years 1–5
Years 1–5$94,651 rising to $102,263 in the 5th year and after.
- 2
First Class Constable
From year 5$107,977 base, then one increment. After 5 years, with all studies and assessments complete.
- 3
Senior Constable
From year 9$115,722 base, then five increments to $124,558. After a further 4 years (9 in total), with studies and assessments.
- 4
Sergeant and above
PromotionMerit selection. Inspectors and above are recommended for permanent appointment after 3 years' satisfactory service.
On the 2-year rule, reaching Senior Constable Increment V takes about 10 years after reaching Senior Constable (our calculation from clause 10.2(a)), so the top of the scale comes at around 19 years' service. That makes promotion, OIC roles and allowances more important to a WA career's pay than in forces with annual steps. See WA Police promotion.
Shift allowances and overtime in WA
WA's shift allowances (clause 16.1) are flat dollar amounts per 8-hour shift, paid to officers on rostered ordinary shifts. Shifts of 9, 10 or 12 hours are paid pro rata: a 10-hour shift gets 1.25 times the amount.

| Night | $126.56 | $158.20 | $121.98 |
A 12-hour shift with 8 hours in the 20:00–05:30 span is paid the night allowance plus 50% of the evening allowance. Recruits-in-Training don't get them (except under cl 11.19), nor do commissioned officers unless specifically rostered.
Because the dollars are the same for everyone, a roster of 3 nights, 3 afternoons and 2 weekend day shifts a fortnight adds about $780.95 a fortnight, or $20,305 a year, to any officer's pay. For a probationary constable that's 21.5% on top of base salary (an illustrative roster, not a standard one).
Overtime
- ✓ Overtime is time beyond 40 hours a week or beyond your rostered 8, 9 or 10-hour shift
- ✓ First 3 hours: time and a half; after that: double time
- ✓ Hourly rate: fortnightly salary ÷ 80 (fortnightly = annual × 12 ÷ 313)
- ✓ Recall: minimum 3 hours plus 1 hour travel on weekly leave days, otherwise 1 hour plus 1 hour travel
- ✓ Under 15 minutes is unpaid, then 30-minute blocks
- ✓ You can take time off in lieu instead, cleared within 2 months
For a probationary constable the hourly rate is about $45.36, so overtime pays about $68.04 an hour for the first 3 hours and $90.72 after that (our calculation from clauses 10.13 and 13.8). Overtime meal allowances have been unchanged since November 2015. Compare all forces on police overtime and penalty rates.

The agreement doesn't state the unit for the on-call, close-call and standby amounts in the text we extracted, so check with your OIC or the union before working out a claim. District allowance follows the public-sector scheme; whether police receive the new 2026 public-sector rates isn't confirmed.
District allowance is the one to watch. The agreement (clause 19.1) pays it under the public-sector District Allowance General Agreement "or any subsequent replacement agreement". The public-sector union reported new rates from 1 July 2026, including a new top grade of $12,020 a year for Fitzroy Crossing, Marble Bar, Nullagine and Wyndham, pending registration. Whether those rates flow through to police hasn't been confirmed, so they're marked unconfirmed in the table.
Free housing in 56 towns
Officers stationed in the 56 Schedule G towns, including Derby, Halls Creek, Port Hedland, South Hedland and Wyndham, get fully subsidised housing (clause 17.14). Add district allowance, extra leave and the regional attraction payment, and a regional posting can be worth far more than the pay table shows. The attraction payment amounts aren't published.

Annual leave
- What the agreement gives
- 240 hours (6 weeks) a year on full pay, calendar-year basis, plus 40 hours a year for service in the North West (cl 30.1). Annual leave loading is 18.75% on a maximum of 5 weeks, paid in December, capped at 17.5% of 5 weeks' salary of a public service Level 8.1 (cl 30.9). Leave can be accumulated only with written permission (cl 30.4).
Rest days
- What the agreement gives
- 3 paid 'rest days' a year, credited on 31 March in recognition of the rigours of policing, provided the annual leave balance at the previous 31 December was not over 240 hours; must be used within 12 months and is not paid out (cl 31).
Sick and injury leave
- What the agreement gives
- The Employer may grant paid illness or injury leave of up to 168 days in a calendar year, and further periods on the recommendation of the Health, Welfare and Safety divisional superintendent (cl 38.5). No certificate is needed for 5 days a year (maximum 3 consecutive), plus up to 10 further single days on a health practitioner certificate (cl 38.3).
Long service leave
- What the agreement gives
- 520 hours (13 weeks) after 10 years' continuous service (appointed on or after 10 Jan 1995; 7 years if appointed earlier), then 520 hours for each further 7 years (cl 33.1).
Parental leave
- What the agreement gives
- 52 weeks' parental leave, including 560 hours (14 weeks) paid (cl 35). The partner's 1 week of leave at the birth is taken from the partner's own leave or as unpaid leave, not as extra paid leave (cl 35.25).

WA's 18.75% leave loading on up to 5 weeks is higher than the usual 17.5%, though it's capped. The 3 paid rest days a year, given in recognition of the rigours of policing, are credited each March if your leave balance was under 240 hours at the end of December. See WA Police leave.
Superannuation
The WA Police Force pays the 12% Superannuation Guarantee, according to its recruiting site, with no police-specific top-up found. That's the national minimum, below Queensland's 18% and the AFP's 15.4%. The default product and insurance for new officers couldn't be confirmed because GESB's pages blocked our checks.

Injury cover works differently in WA. Officers medically retired for a work-related injury or illness are covered by a compensation scheme set up by the Police Amendment (Compensation Scheme) Act 2021: a lump sum made up of an impairment payment plus up to 12 months' salary, capped at $239,179 (up to $418,563 in certain circumstances), plus $16,743 for retraining. Those are the 2021 figures; they're indexed every year and we couldn't find the current values. More in WA Police super.
How WA Police pay compares with other forces
On the headline first-year figure, WA ranks 1st of 8. That's base salary only, so it compares well with forces whose figures already include a loading. But WA's 2-year increments, 12% super and lack of a scheduled 2027 rise pull the other way over a career.

WA's 'Sergeant top' is the base Sergeant scale; OIC scales go higher. 'calc' marks figures calculated by us from an agreement rule.
If you're a serving officer elsewhere thinking about WA, compare like with like. A NSW probationary constable's $92,576 already includes an 11.5% loading for weekends and shifts; WA's $94,651 doesn't, and WA adds per-shift allowances on top. Interstate officers join through the 13-week transitional course and 6 months' probation, so the pay you start on depends on how much service WA recognises, not just your current rank.

Frequently asked questions
How much do WA Police officers earn in 2026?
From 1 July 2026, a probationary constable earns $94,651 base, a 5th-year constable $102,263, a First Class Constable from $107,977, a Senior Constable $115,722 to $124,558 and a Sergeant $127,619 to $135,005. Shift allowances of $74.11 to $126.56 per 8-hour shift are paid on top.
What do WA Police recruits get paid?
Recruits-in-Training earn $74,309 a year from 1 July 2026 during the 28-week course at the WA Police Academy in Joondalup. Regional recruits get free on-site accommodation. After graduation you're paid the Constable 1st year rate of $94,651 for the first 2 years of service.
When is the next WA Police pay rise?
None is scheduled. The 3.75% rise on 1 July 2026 was the last under the 2024 Agreement, which expires on 30 June 2027. Negotiations are due to start about 6 months before expiry. Under the 2026 wages policy, a new agreement applies from registration and back pay to the expiry date is discretionary.
How are WA Police shift allowances paid?
As flat dollar amounts per 8-hour shift, not a percentage of salary. From 1 July 2026: weekend day $74.11, afternoon $84.35, evening $101.13 and night $126.56. Longer shifts are paid pro rata, so a 10-hour shift gets 1.25 times the amount. Every rank gets the same dollar figure.
How is WA Police overtime calculated?
Time and a half for the first 3 hours, then double time. The hourly rate is fortnightly salary ÷ 80, and the agreement sets fortnightly salary at annual × 12 ÷ 313. For a probationary constable that's about $45.36 an hour, so $68.04 at time and a half (our calculation). Commissioned officers don't get overtime.
How long does it take to become a Senior Constable in WA?
First Class Constable comes after 5 years, with all studies and assessments complete, and Senior Constable after a further 4 years, so about 9 years in total. Within a rank you move up one increment after each 2 years' satisfactory service. Sergeant and above are merit promotions.
Do WA Police get public holiday penalty rates?
We couldn't find a public holiday penalty rate in the 2024 Agreement. Weekend day work is paid through the weekend day shift allowance, and commissioned officers' salaries include an allowance for weekends and public holidays. Check with the WA Police Union before assuming any public holiday multiplier.
What super do WA Police get?
The WA Police Force pays the 12% Superannuation Guarantee, according to its recruiting site. No police-specific top-up was found. New officers would usually default to GESB's accumulation product or a fund of their choice. The older Gold State and West State schemes are closed to new members.
