NSW Police pay table 2026: general duties

Table 1b of the award, from 1 July 2026. These are the rates for constables, senior constables, sergeants and senior sergeants in general duties.

The NSW award gives two figures for every non-commissioned rank: the base salary printed in the award, and the loaded salary that adds the 11.5% loading. The loaded figure is what you are actually paid each fortnight. Use the base figure only when working out overtime, which ignores the loading.

Source: Crown Employees (Police Officers - 2024) Award, Table 1b. The pay rises take effect from the first full pay period on or after the date shown. Leading Senior Constable is no longer a rank in the new scale; it survives only as a preserved legacy rate in Table 1a, which we haven't reproduced.

The jump from Constable Level 5 to Senior Constable Level 1 is the biggest single step in the general duties scale: $10,488 a year on the loaded figure. That's deliberate. The 2024 award collapsed the old scales so the move to Senior Constable comes sooner and is worth more, and the top of Senior Constable now sits at $139,688.

Detectives, prosecutors and commissioned officers

Specialist scales sit higher because a special duties allowance is built in. Inspectors and Superintendents get no loading at all.

Detectives and police prosecutors are paid from their own tables (2b and 3b). Their loaded figure is larger than a general duties officer's because the award folds in more than the 11.5% loading: detectives' loaded rates include the Grade 3 Special Duties Allowance equivalent and the detectives' special allowance, and prosecutors' include the Grade 4 equivalent.

Commissioned officers are on fixed-term appointments and a different deal. Their salary has no loading, and their pay rises under the 2024 award were smaller than the NCO rises: Inspectors got 4%, 3% and 3.5%, and Superintendents 3.5%, 3% and 3%.

What a detective level means

A Detective Level 1 base of $92,422 is the same as a Constable Level 4 base, but the loaded figure is $111,124, against $103,051 for Constable Level 4. A Prosecutor Level 1 is loaded to $115,472. The gap is the built-in special duties allowance.

What the NSW salary includes (and what it doesn't)

Every force packages pay differently, and NSW's package is easy to misread. The 11.5% loading (award clause 40) is paid to every officer from Probationary Constable to Senior Sergeant as part of salary, every fortnight, whatever your roster. It compensates for weekend work, shift work, recall and "other incidents", and it replaces the annual leave loading most public servants get.

Because the loading covers weekends, NSW non-commissioned officers get no separate Saturday or Sunday penalty rate. That's a real difference from Victoria and WA, where weekend shifts attract their own penalty or allowance. Shift allowances for afternoons and nights are still paid on top of the loading.

Included in the loaded salary

  • ✓Base salary for your rank and level
  • ✓The 11.5% loading for weekends, shift work and recall
  • ✓The former annual leave loading (now absorbed)
  • ✓For detectives and prosecutors: their special duties allowance equivalent

Paid on top, or not at all

  • ✕Shift allowances (10%, 15% or 17.5%) on top
  • ✕Overtime, worked out on base salary without the loading
  • ✕Specialist, remote and other allowances
  • ✕Employer super (paid to your fund, not to you)

One practical result: when a lender, a recruiter or a comparison site quotes a NSW salary, check which figure they mean. The award's base figure for a probationary constable is $83,028; the paid figure is $92,576. Both are "correct", but only one is your pay.

How much NSW police pay rose on 1 July 2026

The 1 July 2026 rise was the third and final gazetted increase under the 2024 award: 5% for non-commissioned officers, 3.5% for Inspectors and 3% for Superintendents. Across the general duties table it averaged 5.00% per point on the loaded figure (the award rounds each rate to the dollar). Commissioned rates rose by an average of 3.23%.

The 1 July 2025 detectives table is the corrected version from the October 2025 variation, and it was published as base salary only, so this comparison uses base. Prosecutor rates for 2025 weren't captured, so prosecutors are not shown here.

Over the whole award, the government describes the deal as 19% on base salary over four years for NCOs, with the restructure adding more for officers who skip steps under the new scale. The 4% rises of July 2024 and July 2025, then 5% in July 2026, compound to about 13.57% on base. Back pay to 1 July 2024 was paid after members accepted the deal in November 2024.

When is the next NSW police pay rise?

Short answer: nothing further is gazetted. A 5% rise from July 2027 has been announced but isn't in the award.

The award's pay tables stop at 1 July 2026, and the award's nominal term ends on 30 June 2027 (clause 95.2). The government has said probationary constable pay (loaded) and Senior Constable Level 1 pay will rise again "by 2027", and the figures it gives match today's loaded rates plus 5%, to within a dollar of rounding: about $97,205 and $121,055. That fourth 5% is how the government's four-year "19%" is reached.

  1. 1

    1 July 2024: +4% (NCOs)

    Gazetted

First increase under the 2024 award, back-paid after the November 2024 ballot.

  2. 2

    1 July 2025: +4% (NCOs)

    Gazetted

Second increase. Inspectors and Superintendents 3%.

  3. 3

    1 July 2026: +5% (NCOs)

    Gazetted, current

Third increase, now in pay. Inspectors 3.5%, Superintendents 3%.

  4. 4

30 June 2027: award nominal end

    Clause 95.2

The award continues to apply until it's replaced, but this is when a new deal is due.

  5. 5

    1 July 2027: +5% announced

    Announced, not confirmed

Probationary Constable about $97,205 loaded, if applied the same way. Not gazetted at 9 October 2026.

Don't bank the 2027 figure yet

Until a new award or variation is published in the NSW Industrial Gazette, the July 2027 rise is a government statement, not a legal entitlement. We found no sign of a new award negotiation or pay dispute as at 9 October 2026. Follow progress on our NSW police pay deal tracker, or see where every force stands on the national pay deal tracker.

Recruit and Academy pay in NSW

NSW is unusual: there's no recruit salary. You train through the Associate Degree in Applied Policing with Western Sydney University, and only part of it is paid.

How NSW recruits are paid

ADAP Session 1 (online)

Length
16 weeks
Pay
Unpaid. Includes a residential at the Academy and a 2-week station placement.

ADAP Session 2 (Goulburn Academy)

Length
16 weeks full-time
Pay
$1,360 a week plus super and allowances, employed as temporary administrative staff. Free accommodation and meals. That's $21,760 over the session before super (our arithmetic).

Probationary Constable

Length
12 months
Pay
$92,576 a year including the loading, plus 3 online part-time sessions.

The $1,360 weekly rate was published from March 2024; whether it has changed for 2026 is not confirmed. An earlier government release put Academy pay at about $30,984 over 16 weeks, which we can't reconcile with the weekly rate.

Course fees for the degree are about $9,112 a year as a Commonwealth-supported student contribution, and HECS-HELP is available to citizens. That debt matters later: once your income passes the repayment threshold, compulsory HELP repayments come out of your pay. The take-home calculator can include them. For the full pathway, see how to become a police officer in NSW.

How fast you move up the NSW pay scale

Progression to the next level is not automatic on the anniversary. Clause 64 requires at least 12 months on each level plus competency requirements: defensive tactics and firearms, CPR and first aid, MCPE, driver status, COPS literacy, and an objective policing knowledge test. Moving beyond Sergeant Level 3 or Senior Sergeant Level 2 also needs a performance assessment.

What you need each year to take the next level

  • ✓ At least 12 months on your current level
  • ✓ Current defensive tactics and firearms qualifications
  • ✓ Current CPR and first aid
  • ✓ MCPE and your driver status
  • ✓ COPS literacy
  • ✓ The objective policing knowledge test

The new Table 1b runs Probationary Constable plus Constable Levels 2 to 5 (five levels), then Senior Constable Levels 1 to 5. The government says reaching the top of Senior Constable now takes about 10 years, down from 16; the Police Association of NSW puts it at 9 years, down from 15. Either way, an officer who keeps their competencies current reaches $139,688 far sooner than under the old award.

Sergeant and above are merit promotions through pre-qualification assessments and ranked lists. The current rules in the Police Regulation 2015 couldn't be confirmed, so we don't state minimum service periods for promotion here. Our NSW police promotion guide covers the process.

Shift allowance and overtime in NSW

NSW pays shift allowance by when your shift starts, at a percentage of an hourly rate taken from the Sergeant Level 5 salary, whatever your own rank. The award formula (clause 50) is S × 1/52.17857 × 1/7 × 1/8 × R × H, where S is the Sergeant Level 5 base salary. Note the divisor: 7 days of 8 hours, which is 56 hours, not your 38-hour week.

Paid per full shift actually worked. More than 7 full B shifts in 21 days are paid at time and a half for the excess. The hourly figures are our calculation from the award formula; the award doesn't print them.

Because every officer's allowance is calculated off the same Sergeant salary, it is worth relatively more to junior officers. Four 8-hour B shifts a fortnight add about $7,025 a year to a probationary constable's pay, roughly 7.6% on top of the loaded salary.

Overtime

Overtime (clause 52) is time and a half for the first 2 hours, then double time. Each day stands alone, and time is counted to the nearest quarter hour. The hourly rate is base salary plus super-attracting allowances, excluding the 11.5% loading. On a 38-hour week that's about $41.90 an hour for a probationary constable and $64.83 for a Sergeant Level 1 (our estimate).

  • ✓ First 2 hours: time and a half
  • ✓ After 2 hours: double time
  • ✓ Break under 10 hours between shifts: double time until released
  • ✓ Public holiday overtime: double time, then double time and a half after 2 hours
  • ✓ Rostered public holiday (ordinary hours): time and a half
  • ✓ No weekend penalty: the 11.5% loading covers it

Every NSW police allowance, with amounts

Here is every allowance recorded from the award, the 2025 variation and the force's incentive pages. Rates are from 1 July 2026 unless the row says otherwise. The biggest money is in specialist and remote roles: a Tactical Operations Unit Level 3 allowance is $19,820 a year, the Forensic Services expert allowance $23,248, and the remote cash incentive $36,000 in total over 5 years ($8,000, $7,000, $7,000, $8,000, $6,000 a year).

Special Remote officers also get preferential transfer at the end of their tenure. Check eligibility with the force before you apply for a posting.

NSW Police leave entitlements

Annual leave

What the award gives
6 weeks (228 hours) a year for NCOs. Commissioned officers get 5 weeks (190 hours), or 6 weeks if a regular shift worker (cl 17). Leave is to be managed below 9 weeks (342 hours).

Extra leave

What the award gives
Extra annual leave for working Sundays and public holidays (per qualifying year from 1 Dec): 4-10 shifts = 1 day, 11-17 = 2 days, 18-24 = 3 days, 25-31 = 4 days, 32 or more = 5 days. An extra 38 hours (1 week) of annual leave a year in the Western and Central Division (cl 17.4).

Sick leave

What the award gives
15 working days (114 hours) a calendar year, cumulative (cl 20.4).

Extended (long service) leave

What the award gives
Extended leave after 7 years: pro rata of 2 months on full pay per 10 years for the first 10 years, then an additional 5 months per 10 years. Can be taken at half or double pay; pro rata from 5 years on certain terminations (cl 19).

Parental leave

What the award gives
14 weeks paid (after 40 weeks' continuous service), plus 2 weeks bonus paid parental leave in some cases, plus 38 weeks unpaid (52 weeks in total), with a right to request a further 52 weeks (cl 22 as varied 12 Sep 2025).

Six weeks' annual leave is generous, and NSW adds up to five extra days for working Sundays and public holidays. More detail is in NSW police leave entitlements.

Superannuation

Officers in accumulation super get the 12% Superannuation Guarantee on top of salary (the Police Association quotes salaries "plus 12% superannuation"). Most current officers are in accumulation super with Aware Super. Officers who joined before 1 April 1988 may still be in the closed Police Superannuation Scheme, a defined benefit scheme that pays up to 72.75% of salary as a pension after 30 years.

Summary
Accumulation super with Aware Super (formerly First State Super) is the default for current officers; the award lists the Aware Super Act 1992 among the schemes (cl 8.13.5 as varied). Whether officers can choose another fund is not verified.

Insurance changed in October 2024 when the Enhanced Police Support Scheme replaced Police Blue Ribbon Insurance. It tops up workers compensation to up to 100% of salary for the first 9 months, then up to 75% for up to 7 years, but it has no TPD lump sum. Officers pay 1.8% of salary for it (0.88% for SASS members). This detail comes from a Police Association FAQ and hasn't been checked against the scheme deed. Read more in NSW police super.

NSW's probationary constable figure already includes the loading. Queensland's and WA's don't include their shift allowances, so the gap on the roster is smaller than the table suggests.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a NSW police officer earn in 2026?

From 1 July 2026, a probationary constable earns $92,576 including the 11.5% loading. Constables reach $104,802 at Level 5, Senior Constables $115,290 to $139,688, and Sergeants $143,230 to $157,203. Inspectors start at $178,719. Shift allowances and overtime are paid on top.

What is the NSW police starting salary?

A new probationary constable is paid $92,576 a year from 1 July 2026: $83,028 base plus the 11.5% loading. Before that, during the 16-week Academy session at Goulburn, students are employed as temporary administrative staff on $1,360 a week (the rate published from March 2024). The first 16-week online session is unpaid.

Do NSW police get paid while at the Academy?

Yes, for the second session only. Session 1 of the Associate Degree in Applied Policing is 16 weeks of unpaid online study. Session 2 is 16 weeks full-time at Goulburn, paid $1,360 a week plus super and allowances, with free accommodation and meals. The force has not confirmed whether that weekly rate has changed for 2026.

What is the 11.5% loading for NSW police?

It is an extra 11.5% of base salary paid as part of salary to every non-commissioned officer, from Probationary Constable to Senior Sergeant. It compensates for weekends, shift work, recall and other incidents, and replaces annual leave loading. There is no separate weekend penalty rate for NCOs. Overtime is worked out on base salary without the loading.

When is the next NSW police pay rise?

The award's last gazetted rise took effect on 1 July 2026. A further 5% from 1 July 2027 has been announced by the government (its figure for probationary constable pay by 2027 is about $97,205, today's rate plus 5%) but it is not in the gazetted award, which ends on 30 June 2027. Treat it as announced, not guaranteed.

How long does it take to reach Senior Constable in NSW?

Under the 2024 award's new scale, Probationary Constable plus Constable Levels 2 to 5 is five levels, each needing at least 12 months plus competency requirements. The government says reaching the top of Senior Constable now takes about 10 years (previously 16); the Police Association says 9 years (previously 15).

How is the NSW police shift allowance calculated?

It is a percentage of an hourly figure based on the Sergeant Level 5 salary for everyone, not your own salary: salary ÷ 52.17857 ÷ 7 ÷ 8. From 1 July 2026 that hourly base is about $48.25, so a night (B) shift at 17.5% pays about $8.44 an hour, or about $67.55 for an 8-hour shift (our calculation).

How much super do NSW police get?

Officers in accumulation super receive the 12% Superannuation Guarantee, paid with Aware Super as the default fund. Officers who joined before 1 April 1988 may be in the closed Police Superannuation Scheme, a defined benefit scheme. Officers also contribute 1.8% of salary to the Enhanced Police Support Scheme for injury and death cover.

Is the NSW Police recruitment website salary up to date?

Not as of 9 October 2026. The recruitment 'Salary and benefits' page still showed the 1 July 2025 rates, such as $88,169 for a probationary constable. The award rate from 1 July 2026 is $92,576. This page uses the gazetted award figures.
