Tasmania Police pay scale: every Constable level
From first full pay period on or after 1 Dec 2025 (+3%). Annual base salary under the Police Award, before the shift and penalty allowance.
Tasmania is unusual: every rate for the next two years is already written into the industrial instrument. The Police Award No. 2 of 2026 (Consolidated), made by the Tasmanian Industrial Commission on 4 March 2026, holds four salary columns, from December 2024 through to December 2027. The table below is the column in force today.

Level 1 to 13(ii), base
The Constable scale is long: 14 pay points, compared with four or five in most forces. You move from Level 1 to Level 2 after 12 months, subject to probation and a satisfactory assessment, then up one level on each anniversary to Level 12. If you gained an approved bachelor degree by independent study before appointment, you go to Level 3 after probation.
Why there's no Senior Constable rate
Tasmania doesn't have a separate Senior Constable pay scale. "Senior Constable" and "qualified Senior Constable" are gazetted titles, and each one gives you one accelerated increment within the single Constable scale (award clause 8.5.2(d)). Level 13(i) needs 12 months on Level 12 plus either the Sergeant Professional Development Program or an approved tertiary qualification; Level 13(ii) needs both. That's why we use Level 13(ii), $107,420, when we compare Tasmania's "top senior constable" with other forces.

Source: Police Award No. 2 of 2026. The Commander rate applies under the award only on reversion or relief; fixed-term Commanders and above are outside the award.
Promotion to Sergeant starts you at Level 1 ($108,929), or Level 2 with an approved tertiary qualification, with annual increments after that. The top two Sergeant levels, 6(i) and 6(ii), need the Inspector Professional Development Program and/or a tertiary qualification. A top-level Constable moving to Sergeant Level 1 gains $1,509 in base pay.
The big jump is to Inspector: Level 1 pays $170,026, $44,401 more than a top Sergeant. But Inspectors and above lose overtime entirely (clause 14.1.8) and don't receive the shift and penalty allowance, so a Sergeant on a 24-hour roster earning $160,800 isn't far behind. Inspector Level 4(ii) needs 12 months on 4(i) plus an AQF8 or higher qualification by independent study. See Tasmania Police promotion.

Both columns from Police Award No. 2 of 2026. The change column is our arithmetic.
The rise came out of a long dispute. According to news reports, officers rejected a first offer in October 2025 and a second in December, before accepting a third offer of 3%, 3% and 2.75% by a small majority. The Police Association of Tasmania said at the time that Tasmanian police earned about 16.8% below the national average. That is the association's figure, not ours.
The 28% allowance was the bigger win for shift workers
News reports say the 24-hour roster allowance was 24% before this deal and is now 28%. For a Constable on Level 1 that change alone is worth $2,941 a year (our arithmetic on the current rate). The 24% figure comes from news coverage and isn't in the award we read, which only shows the current 28%.
The next Tasmania Police pay rises: already in the award
You don't have to wait for a new deal: the next rise of 3% is already written into the award and takes effect from the first full pay period on or after 1 December 2026.

The uplift guarantee: unresolved
News reports say the deal included an uplift guarantee if other state servants got more. The March 2026 state service package reportedly gave a "further boost to salaries for the majority" beyond 3%, 3% and 2.75%. What Tasmania Police salary includes, and what it doesn't
The award figure is base salary only. Tasmania pays for shift work through a single flat percentage on top, the shift and penalty allowance, and that allowance replaces every separate shift, weekend and public holiday penalty. There's no per-shift night rate to track.

Police Award No. 2 of 2026. Paid instead of all shift, weekend and public holiday penalties.
Fortnightly pay is worked out with an unusual formula: annual salary × 10 ÷ the number of weekdays in the financial year, with a minimum of 76 hours a fortnight. In 2026-27 there are 261 weekdays, so a Level 1 Constable's fortnightly base pay is $2,816.78. In a year with more weekdays, each fortnight is very slightly smaller, and vice versa.
Why a flat allowance helps you
- ✓Predictable: the same percentage every fortnight, whatever shifts fall where
- ✓Covers weekends and public holidays, so there's no penalty paperwork
- ✓Overtime is still paid on top at double time
What to watch
- ✕Moving to a day job means losing the whole allowance, not just a few penalties
- ✕Non-shift officers working a public holiday get time and a half extra instead
- ✕Inspectors and above get neither the allowance nor overtime

Constable Level 1
Recruits train for 28 weeks at the Tasmania Police Academy at Rokeby, near Hobart, including six weeks of practical training at a station. Some intakes run a northern course at the UTAS Newnham campus in Launceston. During the course you complete 15 of the 24 units of a UTAS Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies).
The trainee rate is $61,801, about 19% below Constable Level 1, so graduation brings a pay rise of $11,717 before you add any shift allowance. Graduates are posted to a 24/7 station for at least two years, which usually means the 28% roster allowance from your first posting. Be aware that some recruitment FAQ pages still show the old $60,001 trainee rate and "more than $78,000" for a first-year Constable; the award figures here are current.
Experienced officers: ATP pay
Sworn officers with at least two years' post-probation service in Australia or New Zealand can join through the 12-week Accelerated Training Program. Rank doesn't transfer, but pay reflects up to 12 years of prior service: you're paid two levels below your experience during training, one level below on probation, then at your experience level, up to a maximum of Constable Level 12.

Placement rule and examples from the Tasmania Police ATP page; dollar figures read from the current award column. Sergeants and commissioned officers from other forces are paid Constable Level 11 during ATP and probation.
The next ATP intake is anticipated in early to mid 2027. More on the recruit route in how to become a police officer in Tasmania, and on lateral moves in transferring interstate.
Every Tasmania Police allowance
Beyond the roster allowance, Tasmania pays a long list of specialist, country and expense allowances. All of these come from the current award. Several are CPI-indexed each March, so the dollar amounts move between award variations.

Country stations: the 37% deal
The Designated Country Police Station Allowance is 37% of normal salary, and it replaces availability, call-back, overtime, shift and meal allowances. It comes with a rent-free departmental residence, and a Constable at a designated country station is paid at least Constable Level 6 ($85,780), whatever their actual level. A new Constable posted to one of these stations therefore earns $117,519 a year before any expense allowances.
On the Bass Strait islands and Alonnah, the isolated community expense allowance adds $11,623.07 a year; at Liawenee and the West Coast stations it's $7,988.20 a year. Designated detectives get $6,586.34 a year, and sea-going members away overnight get 60% of normal salary on top of their shift allowance. See remote and rural policing incentives for how this compares nationally.
Tasmania Police overtime: double time for everything
Tasmania has one of the simplest and most generous overtime rules in Australian policing: all overtime for Constables and Sergeants is paid at double time. There's no time-and-a-half tier for the first hours, as there is in NSW, Victoria and the NT.
The overtime rules in the award
- ✓ All overtime at double the normal salary rate (200%); TOIL hour-for-hour by agreement; the rate is inclusive of other penalties.
- ✓ Call back: minimum 4 hours at the overtime rate (cl 14.3).
- ✓ Rest period breach: double time for ordinary hours until the member has had 10 consecutive hours off (cl 14.2.3).
- ✓ Not payable to officers (Inspector and above, cl 14.1.8), designated country station allowance recipients (except cl 9.3.6), sea-going members away overnight, or academy-accommodated trainees.
- ✓ Non-shift Constables and Sergeants get time and a half additional for public holiday work; shift workers' public holidays are covered by the shift and penalty allowance.
- ✓ Overtime meal allowance: up to $15.57 after 2 hours, up to $29.77 for dinner, up to $15.56 for each further 5 hours (receipts required).
The award gives the fortnightly pay formula but not an hourly divisor. Taking the 76-hour fortnight as the base, a Level 1 Constable's overtime is worth about $74.13 an hour, and a Sergeant Level 6(ii)'s about $126.66. That's our estimate from the award formula, not a published rate. Four hours of overtime every fortnight would add roughly $7,709 a year to a Level 1 Constable's gross pay.
Double time from the first minute, a four-hour minimum on call-backs, and no overtime at all once you make Inspector.
Being on call pays an availability allowance of $4.08 an hour (minimum $26.52), and standby $7.80 an hour (minimum $62.40), except for officers and country station members. Model your own hours with the police overtime calculator.
What Tasmania Police take home: worked examples

Level 1, 24-hour roster
$2,826
per fortnight
The 28% after tax
$538

The country station example shows why some officers seek out these postings early: with the Level 6 floor, the 37% allowance and a rent-free house, a new Constable earns more than a Level 13(ii) Constable's base salary, though with no overtime on top. The Sergeant example crosses the $135,000 threshold, so the top slice is taxed at 39% including Medicare.

Sick leave is generous at 410.4 hours (54 days of 7.6 hours) on full pay per year of service, though it doesn't apply to on-duty injury or illness, which falls under workers' compensation. Paid parental leave is 18 weeks for the primary caregiver and 4 weeks for the secondary caregiver after 12 months' service. The recruitment site still says 14 weeks, which is out of date.
The Police Accumulated Leave Scheme lets you average your salary to buy extra leave. Long service leave falls under state legislation and starts after 10 years' continuous employment; the exact quantum isn't something we've confirmed. More in Tasmania Police leave.

Not stated in the award. Tasmanian Government defined-contribution employer contributions are understood to be the Superannuation Guarantee rate (12% from 1 July 2025), but this is not confirmed for police on a primary source.
Police officers are members of the Tasmanian Accumulation Scheme under the Public Sector Superannuation Reform Act 2016, unless they choose another complying fund or are in the closed Retirement Benefits Fund defined benefit scheme. The default fund isn't confirmed. The employer pays SG-rate super on unpaid parental leave in the first 12 months and on the unpaid half of half-pay parental leave.
Whether super is paid on the shift and penalty allowance as well as base salary depends on the definition of ordinary time earnings and your scheme; we haven't confirmed it for Tasmania Police. Check a payslip or ask your fund. For long-term planning, see Tasmania Police super.

Headline figures are not like for like. NSW includes its 11.5% loading and Victoria its 13% commuted penalty; most others are base salary with shift loadings or composites paid on top. 'calc' marks a figure calculated by us from the agreement; 'unconfirmed' marks a reported figure. Employer super shown where a force-specific rate is confirmed; Victoria's operational police are in a defined benefit scheme.
On base pay alone, Tasmania's Level 1 rate of $73,518 sits near the bottom of the national table. But it's also one of the few that excludes the shift allowance almost every new constable receives. With the 28% added, a first-year Constable earns $94,103, which is competitive with most mainland forces, and double-time overtime widens that further for anyone who picks up extra shifts.
Where Tasmania falls behind is the middle of the career: the long Constable scale means it takes about 12 years to reach the top, and the Sergeant top rate is below most mainland equivalents. If you're comparing, see SA police salary, Victoria Police salary and the national police pay comparison.

Tasmania Police pay is set by an award of the Tasmanian Industrial Commission rather than an enterprise agreement. The consolidated award replaced Police Award No. 1 of 2026 and gives 3% from December 2025, 3% from December 2026 and 2.75% from December 2027, all already in the salary table. The TIC website sits behind a bot challenge, so we read the award from an archived copy dated 20 May 2026; check the TIC link in the sources if you need the official PDF.
Open questions remain about the uplift guarantee and the next round of bargaining. Follow both on the Tasmania Police pay deal page and the national pay deal tracker.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Tasmania Police officer earn?
Under the Police Award, a Constable earns $73,518 at Level 1 rising to $107,420 at Level 13(ii), a Sergeant $108,929 to $125,625, and an Inspector $170,026 to $181,869. Officers on a 24-hour roster also get a 28% shift and penalty allowance, so a first-year Constable on that roster earns $94,103.
What do Tasmania Police trainees get paid?
Trainee Constables are paid $61,801 a year during the 28-week course at the Rokeby academy, rising to $63,655 from 1 December 2026. Board at the academy is $225 a fortnight for a room and all meals, and living in isn't compulsory. You move to Constable Level 1 ($73,518) when you graduate.
Is there a Senior Constable pay rate in Tasmania?
No. Tasmania has a single Constable scale from Level 1 to Level 13(ii). "Senior Constable" and "qualified Senior Constable" are titles that each give one accelerated increment within that scale (award cl 8.5.2(d)). Level 13(i) and 13(ii), worth $104,456 and $107,420, need extra qualifications such as the Sergeant Professional Development Program.
When is the next Tasmania Police pay rise?
The Police Award already sets the next rise: 3% from the first full pay period on or after 1 December 2026, taking Constable Level 1 to $75,724. A further 2.75% follows from 1 December 2027. Both rises are written into the award's salary table.
Do Tasmania Police get paid overtime?
Constables and Sergeants are paid double time for all overtime, with a minimum of 4 hours on a call-back. Time off in lieu, hour for hour, is possible by agreement. Inspectors and above get no overtime, and officers at designated country stations are paid a 37% allowance instead of overtime, shift pay and call-backs.
What is the Tasmania Police shift allowance?
It's a flat percentage of salary paid instead of all shift, weekend and public holiday penalties: 28% on a 24-hour rotating roster, 26% for the Special Operations Group and surveillance, 21% on a non-24-hour rotating roster and 15% on other rosters with up to 80 afternoon or weekend hours in five weeks.
How much annual leave do Tasmania Police get?
Officers who receive the shift and penalty allowance get 228 hours (six weeks) a year under the Police Service Regulations 2023, and can accumulate up to two years' entitlement. The entitlement for non-shift officers isn't stated in the regulation we read. Sick leave is 410.4 hours a year.
Do Tasmanian police get higher super than other states?
Not as far as we can confirm. The award doesn't state an employer rate. Tasmanian Government defined-contribution members are understood to get the Superannuation Guarantee rate, 12% from 1 July 2025, but we haven't confirmed that for police on a primary source. Queensland (18%) and the AFP (15.4%) pay more.
