What leave do Australian police get?
Police leave is set by each force's industrial instrument, not by one national rule. NSW uses an award made by the Industrial Relations Commission, Victoria and the AFP have enterprise agreements approved by the Fair Work Commission, and Queensland, WA, SA, Tasmania and the NT have state agreements or awards. The shape is similar everywhere, but the details differ a lot.
Every Australian police officer gets well above the National Employment Standards minimum of 4 weeks' annual leave. Most forces give 6 weeks because officers work rotating shifts, weekends and public holidays. The bigger differences are in how extra leave is earned, how loadings are paid and what happens to leave when you leave.

This guide compares every leave type across all eight jurisdictions. The state pages go deeper into the clauses, how to apply and worked examples: NSW Police leave, Victoria Police leave, QPS leave and WA Police leave.
How we built this comparison
Every row comes from our force data files, which cite the award or agreement clause. For NSW, Victoria, Queensland and WA we also re-read the leave clauses in the instruments on 9 October 2026. Where a figure has not been confirmed in the primary instrument, the table says so. Nothing here is legal or financial advice: your payroll team and police association have the final word on your balance.
How much annual leave does each force give?
The table below shows the full annual leave entitlement for each force, as it stands in our data. Read the hours, not just the weeks: forces define a "week" differently. NSW and the AFP use 38-hour weeks, WA uses 40-hour weeks, and Victoria counts 38 hours of leave for each week taken even though members work 80 hours a fortnight.
- Annual leave entitlement
- 6 weeks (228 hours) a year for NCOs. Commissioned officers get 5 weeks (190 hours), or 6 weeks if a regular shift worker (cl 17). Leave is to be managed below 9 weeks (342 hours).
- Annual leave entitlement
- 9 weeks (342 hours) a year: 7 weeks (266 hours) recreation leave plus 10 days (76 hours) accrued time off, credited at the start of each financial year (cl 130.1-130.2). The official site describes it as 5 weeks + 2 weeks in lieu of public holidays + 10 days ATO. Leave loading: 17.5% of the base rate on the first 152 hours of recreation leave per financial year (Superintendents/Commanders on the Superintendent PP1 rate) (cl 131.1).
- Annual leave entitlement
- 6 weeks a year (0.62466 hours per calendar day); 6 weeks 3 days (0.68712 hours per day) in the Northern and Western parts of the state (north of 22°S and west of 147°E, including Moranbah). Public holidays during leave are not deducted. Accrual capped at 2 years; state target is 304 hours (342 in the North/West) by 30 June (cl 58, 60). Leave loading 17.5% on 4 weeks for non-OSA NCOs; OSA officers keep OSA on leave (cl 59).
- Annual leave entitlement
- 240 hours (6 weeks) a year on full pay, calendar-year basis, plus 40 hours a year for service in the North West (cl 30.1). Annual leave loading is 18.75% on a maximum of 5 weeks, paid in December, capped at 17.5% of 5 weeks' salary of a public service Level 8.1 (cl 30.9). Leave can be accumulated only with written permission (cl 30.4).
- Annual leave entitlement
- 6 weeks (30 working days / 240 hours) a year (EA cl 36.5). Annual leave loading is 17.5% for day workers; shift workers get more (Flexible Shiftwork Allowance recipients 20%; REHR loading is calculated on the 23% allowance), with the balance paid at the end of the financial year (cl 37, 30.14, 31.10).
- Annual leave entitlement
- 228 hours a year (6 weeks) for officers entitled to the shift and penalty allowance (Police Service Regulations 2023, reg 7); maximum accumulation 2 years' entitlement. The recruitment site says 6 weeks for sworn officers; the entitlement for non-shift officers is not confirmed.
- Annual leave entitlement
- 7 weeks a year appears to be the standard (the main salary table is labelled 'Seven weeks leave'; a higher-paying 'Six Weeks Leave' table also exists). The PATD clause setting the base entitlement was not read. PPSOs: 7 weeks (280 hours), confirmed by NTPFES. Extra weeks at isolated localities (Group A and Tennant Creek: +1 week at 24 months, +1 at 36 months and each 12 months after; Group B: +1 week per 12 months) and Katherine (+1 week after 3 years, then +1 per 12 months).
- Annual leave entitlement
- 228 hours (6 weeks) a year for Bands 1-8 and Technical Specialists; 190 hours (5 weeks) for Executive Level. Credited monthly. No extra shift-worker week. Can be cashed out up to 3 times a financial year (min 19 hours, keeping 152 hours); up to 152 hours a year can be purchased; half-pay option. Balances over 304 hours can trigger a direction to take 76 hours.

Why Victoria shows 9 weeks
Victoria's agreement packages leave differently. Clause 130.1 gives "nine weeks (342 hours) leave comprised of seven weeks (266 hours) recreation leave plus 10 days (76 hours) accrued time off" a year, and says public holidays "will be worked as rostered". Victoria Police describes the package as 5 weeks plus 2 weeks in lieu of public holidays plus 10 days of accrued time off. So part of the extra leave is compensation for public holidays that other forces pay in cash.
Commissioned officers
Rank can change the entitlement. NSW commissioned officers get 5 weeks (190 hours), or 6 weeks if they regularly work shifts, Sundays or public holidays (award cl 17.2). AFP Executive Level staff get 5 weeks rather than 6. If you are going for Inspector, check the leave rules for the new rank, not just the pay.
How do shift work and remote service earn extra leave?
Several forces add leave on top of the base for weekend and public holiday work, remote postings or simply the strain of policing. These extras are where officers in the same rank can end up with very different balances.

The Queensland OSA credit and the NSW Sunday and public holiday days work in a similar way: they reward officers who carry the weekend load. The Queensland version is all-or-nothing. Clause 43.14 says there is "no pro-rata calculation" of the 46 weekend and 7 public holiday shifts, so missing the threshold by one shift means no credit.
Keep your own count
Both the NSW and Queensland extras depend on counting shifts over a set year (from 1 December in NSW, the equity year in Queensland). Rosters change, so keep your own tally of Sunday, weekend and public holiday shifts and check it against the credit you receive.
What is a week of leave worth in each force?
A week of paid leave is worth a week of your ordinary pay. That sounds obvious, but it is useful to know the dollar figure when you weigh up cashing out, buying extra leave or taking leave at half pay. We worked it out at the top of Senior Constable, the rank where most officers spend the longest.

Calculated by us: annual salary ÷ 52.18 weeks, except WA (agreement cl 10.13: fortnightly = annual × 12 ÷ 313) and Queensland (agreement annual figure = fortnightly × 26.0893). Allowances paid during leave, such as Queensland's OSA, are on top. NT and AFP salaries are calculated from agreement rules and flagged as derived in our data.
The comparison is not like for like. The NSW figure includes the 11.5% loading paid as salary, and the Victorian figure includes the 13% commuted penalty. In Queensland, a front-line shift officer on the Operational Shift Allowance gets 21% on top through annual leave. For full pay scales see police pay in Australia.

Do police get leave loading, and what is paid while on leave?
Leave loading is an extra payment, usually 17.5%, made on top of normal pay for annual leave. It started as compensation for losing overtime and penalties while on leave. Police forces handle it in three different ways: a separate loading, a loading built into salary, or a consolidated allowance that simply keeps being paid during leave.
NSW
- Rule
- No separate leave loading for NCOs. The 11.5% loading paid as salary includes the loading formerly paid on annual leave (award cl 40).
- Worked example (calculated by us)
- Built into salary: about $276 of each $2,677 week at Senior Constable L5
Victoria
- Rule
- 17.5% of base rate on the first 152 hours of recreation leave each financial year (EA cl 131.1).
- Worked example (calculated by us)
- About $1,412 a year at Senior Constable point 12
Queensland
- Rule
- Non-OSA NCOs: 17.5% on 4 weeks (CA cl 59.2). OSA officers keep the 21% OSA through annual leave instead (cl 58.2).
- Worked example (calculated by us)
- Loading about $1,585; OSA over 6 weeks about $2,853 (Senior Constable 2.10)
WA
- Rule
- 18.75% on up to 5 weeks, paid in December, capped at 17.5% of 5 weeks' pay of a public service Level 8.1 (agreement cl 30.9).
- Worked example (calculated by us)
- Up to about $2,238 at top Senior Constable, before the cap

Victoria: base = ordinary rate ÷ 1.13 (the 13% commuted penalty is removed); 152 hours treated as four 38-hour weeks. WA: the cap figure (Level 8.1) was not checked, so the WA amount is a maximum before the cap.
Allowances that keep being paid during leave
In Queensland the question is not just loading. The 21% OSA is paid "on all forms of paid leave (including workers compensation)... except for long service leave" (CA cl 43.4). On 6 weeks' leave at Senior Constable 2.10 that is worth about $2,853, more than the $1,585 loading a non-OSA officer gets. On long service leave, though, the OSA stops, which matters when you plan a long break.
WA pays special allowances during illness or injury leave unless the incapacity is your own fault (cl 38.6). The NSW loading of 11.5% is part of salary, so it is paid on all paid leave. In Victoria, the commuted penalty is part of the ordinary rate. For how penalties and shift allowances are paid when you are at work, see overtime and penalty rates.
How much sick and personal leave do police get?
Sick leave is the area where forces differ most. Most give a set number of days each year that accumulate. WA has no fixed bank at all, and Victoria front-loads two years' worth when you finish training.
NSW Police
- Sick / personal leave
- 15 working days (114 hours) a calendar year, cumulative (cl 20.4).
Victoria Police
- Sick / personal leave
- Personal/carer's leave: 228 hours granted in advance for the first 2 years after initial training, then 114 hours a year; recruits 5.85 hours per 4 weeks of training (the NES applies where better) (cl 113). The official site says 15 days a year.
QPS
- Sick / personal leave
- 15 days a year (0.31233 hours per calendar day). First Year Constables get a one-off 15 days upfront, with accrual starting after year 1. A Sick Leave Bank exists (Schedule 4, cl 61).
WA Police
- Sick / personal leave
- The Employer may grant paid illness or injury leave of up to 168 days in a calendar year, and further periods on the recommendation of the Health, Welfare and Safety divisional superintendent (cl 38.5). No certificate is needed for 5 days a year (maximum 3 consecutive), plus up to 10 further single days on a health practitioner certificate (cl 38.3).
SAPOL
- Sick / personal leave
- Ordinarily 12 working days (96 hours) a year, credited in hours (cl 36.2); up to 10 days of it can be used as family carer's leave (cl 32.1).
Tasmania Police
- Sick / personal leave
- 410.4 hours (54 x 7.6-hour days) on full pay per year of service; does not apply to on-duty injury or illness. Medical certificate needed if more than 7 consecutive days or more than 4 occasions a year.
NT Police
- Sick / personal leave
- Carer's leave 10 days per 12 months (cumulative); up to 4 rostered shifts a calendar year without evidence; medical certificate needed beyond 120 hours in a financial year. The total sick-leave quantum is in PATD Determination No. 1 of 2011, which was not read. PPSOs: 4 weeks (20 days) personal leave on commencement and each year.
AFP
- Sick / personal leave
- Personal/carer's leave: 136 hours 48 minutes (18 days of 7h36m) a year. The full 18 days is credited on engagement, then accrues monthly after 12 months. Not paid out. Serious Illness Registry leave-donation scheme for non-compensable illness.

Things worth knowing
- ✓ NSW: sick leave accrues at the start of each calendar year, and only 5 days can be taken without a certificate in your first 3 months (award cl 20.4.3, 20.6).
- ✓ Victoria: if you joined on or after 1 December 2019 from another Australian police force or the ADF, with a break of 12 months or less, you can apply within 6 months to have that service recognised for personal leave (EA cl 119).
- ✓ Queensland: First Year Constables get 15 days upfront, and consolidated allowances such as OSA are paid for the first 26 weeks of sick leave (CA cl 61.2, 62.2).
- ✓ WA: no certificate is needed for 5 days a year (up to 3 in a row), plus up to 10 single days on a health practitioner's certificate (cl 38.3).
- ✓ Workers' compensation is separate from sick leave in most forces. In NSW, sick leave used while a claim is pending is re-credited if the claim is accepted (cl 20.7.2).
If you are dealing with a psychological injury or burnout, sick leave is only part of the picture. Talk to your police association early about workers' compensation. If you need to talk to someone now, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636, or 000 in an emergency.
When do police get long service leave?
Long service leave rewards 10 years' continuous service in almost every force, with a pro-rata right from 7 years. The amount and the rules on half pay and double pay vary.
NSW Police
- Long service leave
- Extended leave after 7 years: pro rata of 2 months on full pay per 10 years for the first 10 years, then an additional 5 months per 10 years. Can be taken at half or double pay; pro rata from 5 years on certain terminations (cl 19).
Victoria Police
- Long service leave
- 3 months on full pay or 6 months on half pay after 10 years; pro rata after 7 years (cl 164.1; quantum from the official site).
QPS
- Long service leave
- 1.3 weeks per year of continuous service (13 weeks after 10 years), pro rata after 7 years, under Directive 10/24 (cl 6.1, cl 8), which the agreement applies through cl 64.

Queensland's agreement hands long service leave to a ministerial directive (CA cl 64). The current one, Directive 10/24, gives 1.3 calendar weeks for each year of continuous service once you complete 10 years, with pro-rata leave from 7 years. That works out at 13 weeks after 10 years, the same as WA's 520 hours.
WA: 13 weeks at top Senior Constable
$31,040
520 hours, calculated by us
QLD: 13 weeks at Senior Constable 2.10
$29,431
base only; OSA not paid on LSL
NSW: 2 months per 10 years
334.4 hrs
first 10 years (award cl 19.2)
Half pay and double pay change the length, not the value. NSW lets you take extended leave at double pay with double the hours debited (cl 19.3.3). WA allows half pay over twice the time or double pay over half the time (cl 33.3), and also lets you cash out long service leave if you take at least 10 days' annual leave that year (cl 33.4).
How much paid parental leave do police get?
Paid parental leave from your employer sits on top of the Australian Government's Parental Leave Pay, which is paid at the national minimum wage. Police schemes have improved fast in the last few years, and several now pay secondary carers too.
NSW Police
- Parental leave
- 14 weeks paid (after 40 weeks' continuous service), plus 2 weeks bonus paid parental leave in some cases, plus 38 weeks unpaid (52 weeks in total), with a right to request a further 52 weeks (cl 22 as varied 12 Sep 2025).
Victoria Police

Queensland's agreement applies the public sector directive (CA cl 63). The current Directive 08/24 gives 14 weeks of "long paid parental leave" to the parent taking the main caring role and 1 week of "short paid parental leave" to the other parent, after 12 months' qualifying service. Either can be taken at half pay to stretch it out. Since 1 July 2024, super is paid for the whole 52 weeks.
Most generous for primary carers

- ✓SA: 20 weeks after 5 years' service
- ✓NT: 18 weeks after 5 years' service
- ✓Victoria: 16 weeks, plus up to 12 more for a secondary carer who takes over
Watch the conditions
- ✕Service thresholds: 40 weeks in NSW, 12 months in QLD, WA, Tasmania and SA
- ✕WA partner leave is 1 week taken from your own leave or unpaid, not extra paid leave (cl 35.25)
- ✕OSA and similar allowances are not always paid on parental leave
- ✕Notice periods: NSW needs 8 weeks' written notice (cl 22.12.3)
What other leave can police take?

A few stand out. NSW gives 20 days of paid domestic and family violence leave a year (award cl 33.2), as does Victoria (EA cl 128.3); WA gives 10 days (cl 40.5). Queensland gives up to 3 days of Critical Incident Leave after a critical incident (CA cl 65). Victoria gives a flexible roster for the two shifts after one (EA cl 129.2).
Family and domestic violence leave is confidential
Every force we checked treats this leave as confidential, and NSW says it does not need to be approved before it is taken (award cl 33.6). If you need support, 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) is available 24 hours a day.
Can police buy extra leave or work flexibly?
Most forces now let you swap salary for extra time off. The schemes differ in how much you can buy and how the cost is spread.

Queensland and SA purchased-leave schemes were not found in the instruments we read; ask your association.
Purchased leave costs exactly what it gives you: a week bought is a week's pay given up, spread across the year. In NSW, the lower purchased-leave rate is your salary "for all purposes including superannuation" (cl 18.3.4), so it can trim your super too. In WA, overtime is still paid at your full ordinary rate (cl 46.10).
Can you cash out police annual leave?
Cashing out means taking money instead of time. Rules are strict because leave is there to protect your health, and the instruments set minimum balances you must keep.

Cashed-out leave is taxed as ordinary income in the pay period you receive it. The ATO's tax tables add it to that pay, so a large payout can be withheld at a higher rate than you'll finally pay. Check the ATO's guidance or a tax adviser before a big cash-out.
What happens to your leave when you resign or retire?
Untaken annual leave is generally paid out when you leave. Long service leave is paid out once you have a right to it, and some forces pay pro-rata long service leave from 5 or 7 years in set circumstances. Short-lived extras such as rest days are not paid out.
- 1
NSW
Award cl 17, 19Untaken annual leave is paid as a gratuity on resignation, retirement or termination, or you can elect to take it as leave (cl 17.15). Extended leave you have a right to is paid as a gratuity (cl 19.4). With 5 to 7 years' service, pro-rata extended leave is paid if you leave because of illness, incapacity or pressing necessity, or are terminated for a reason other than serious misconduct (cl 19.2.3).
- 2
Victoria
EA cl 130, 164If you leave part-way through a financial year, your recreation leave is adjusted to what you actually accrued and untaken leave is paid in lieu. If you have taken more than you accrued, the overpayment can be deducted (cl 130.3). Long service leave follows the Long Service Leave Act 2018, with pro-rata access after 7 years (cl 164.1).

Queensland
LSL Directive 10/24Directive 10/24 pays the cash value of long service leave you are entitled to (cl 18), pro-rata LSL after 7 years for ill health, pressing necessity or certain dismissals (cl 20), and after 5 years on voluntary retirement at 55 or ill-health retirement (cl 21).

WA
Agreement cl 30-33LSL is paid as a lump sum on resignation, retirement or dismissal. Pro-rata LSL is paid if you retire at 55 or on ill health after 12 months, or are retired by the employer after 3 years (cl 33.5). No leave loading is paid on pro-rata annual leave on resignation (cl 30.9(c)). Rest days and the Easter Sunday day are never paid out.

AFP
AFP EAAnnual leave is paid out on leaving, per our data from the AFP agreement. Personal leave is not paid out.
Payouts on leaving can affect your tax and, in some defined benefit schemes, your final salary. Read our interstate transfer guide before you resign to move forces: some entitlements may be recognised by the new force and others will be paid out and lost.
How do forces stop leave building up, and how should you manage it?
Every force wants officers to take leave, and most set a ceiling. Going over it can lead to a direction to take leave at a time you didn't choose.

Frequently asked questions
How much annual leave do police get in Australia?
Most Australian police get 6 weeks of annual leave a year, more than the 4 weeks most employees get under the National Employment Standards. Victoria Police members get a 9-week package (7 weeks recreation leave plus 10 days accrued time off), and the NT's standard pay table is labelled 'seven weeks leave'. Remote and shift service can add more in several forces.
Which police force gets the most leave?
On annual leave alone, Victoria is highest at 9 weeks (342 hours) a year, although 2 of those weeks are described by Victoria Police as in lieu of public holidays and 10 days are accrued time off. The NT is next with 7 weeks on its standard table, plus extra weeks at isolated localities. Everyone else starts at about 6 weeks.
Do police get leave loading?
It depends on the force. Victoria pays 17.5% on the first 152 hours of recreation leave. WA pays 18.75% on up to 5 weeks, with a cap. Queensland pays 17.5% on 4 weeks to non-OSA officers, while OSA officers keep their 21% allowance through leave instead. NSW non-commissioned officers get no separate loading because it is built into the 11.5% salary loading.
How much sick leave do police get?
NSW and Queensland give 15 days a year. Victoria gives 228 hours upfront for the first 2 years after training and then 114 hours a year. WA has no fixed bank: the Commissioner may grant up to 168 days of paid illness or injury leave in a calendar year, and more on recommendation. Tasmania's regulations allow 410.4 hours a year of service.
When do police get long service leave?
Usually after 10 years, with a pro-rata right from 7 years in most forces. WA gives 13 weeks (520 hours) after 10 years, then another 13 weeks every 7 years. Victoria gives 3 months on full pay after 10 years. NSW gives a pro-rata share of 2 months per 10 years from year 7, then 5 months per 10 years after year 10. NT gives 4 calendar months after 10 years.
How much paid parental leave do police get?
Primary carers get between 14 and 18 weeks of employer-paid leave depending on the force: 14 weeks in NSW (plus 2 bonus weeks in some cases), Queensland and WA; 16 weeks in Victoria and SA (20 in SA after 5 years); 18 weeks in Tasmania and the AFP; and 14 to 18 weeks in the NT depending on service. Government Parental Leave Pay can sit on top.
Can police cash out annual leave?
Some can. Victoria allows it by written agreement where leave would otherwise be carried over or exceeds 7 weeks, leaving at least 4 weeks. WA allows up to 50% of leave accrued in previous years, leaving at least 2 weeks. The AFP allows it up to 3 times a year while keeping 152 hours. The NT allows cash-up if 4 weeks remain. We did not find a general cash-out clause in the NSW award.
Is unused leave paid out when you leave the police?
Annual leave is generally paid out. NSW pays untaken annual leave and any extended leave you have a right to as a gratuity. Victoria pays untaken recreation leave in lieu. WA pays long service leave as a lump sum and pro-rata LSL in set cases such as retirement at 55. Some leave, such as WA rest days and Victoria's NAIDOC leave, is never paid out.
