Can UK officers join Victoria Police under this plan?
Not yet, and maybe never. Checked 9 October 2026.
The plan is an election promise
Don't resign, sell up or book flights on the strength of this pledge. There's no application form, no visa route and no published pay or course terms. If you want to move now, WA, SAPOL and Queensland already sponsor UK officers.
In April 2026 Victoria's Liberal–Nationals Opposition, led by Jess Wilson, promised to recruit 3,000 extra police if it wins the state election on Saturday 28 November 2026. Half would be experienced officers from the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand, each offered $5,000 towards relocating. Nothing has opened, and there's no form to fill in.

The same package promises to reopen or restore hours at more than 40 police stations. Jess Wilson told AAP: "This isn't a stunt." The government's response, from Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny, was that it was "a bit of a stunt", pointing to existing investment in Victoria Police. Our side-by-side guide to both parties' police promises covers the rest of the package.

Our check of the April 2026 announcements and coverage, as at 9 October 2026.
The biggest gap is the visa. Victoria Police can't hire someone who doesn't have the right to live and work in Australia permanently, and a $5,000 cheque doesn't change that. A program would need the Commonwealth's agreement, which is outside any state government's direct control.
A relocation allowance isn't a visa. Until Victoria has a labour agreement, a UK officer without residency can't be hired, whoever wins.
How the WA model the Coalition copies works
Australia's first overseas police campaign, launched in October 2022.
Western Australia launched its international recruitment campaign on 15 October 2022, the first in Australia. The WA government said it targeted officers from the UK, Ireland and New Zealand with at least three years' experience and aged under 55, sponsored through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa under a five-year labour agreement. The agreement allowed up to 750 experienced international officers over five years.

Today
Let's Join ForcesWA still recruits serving UK and Irish officers; British Transport Police, military police and Specials are excluded.
WA's offer is concrete. Its visa is reimbursed for the main applicant once you start, you're paid during the 13-week course, and your service sets your starting pay: from 1 July 2026, three years starts you on Constable 4th year ($99,900) and four or more on Constable 5th year ($102,263). Our UK police to WA Police guide has the full recognition table and costs.
WA's results were mixed
Interest was high, but conversion was slow. ABC's report on the Victorian pledge noted that WA's overseas drive fell well short of its target. A sponsored scheme takes time to process and depends on visa health and character checks. Read that as a guide to how long a Victorian version could take to deliver.

Two practical points follow. First, for New Zealand officers the pledge changes less than the headlines suggest: NZ citizens living in Australia can already apply to Victoria Police, and Victoria already recognises NZ police service. The new parts would be the $5,000 and any faster processing.
Second, for UK and Irish officers, Victoria would need a labour agreement or another visa route before anything else matters. Irish officers face an extra unknown: Victoria's current recognition rules name only Australia, New Zealand and the UK, so recognising Garda service would be a policy change. Our Garda to Australian police guide covers the forces that do accept Irish service.
Victoria Police's current position for overseas officers
The rules that apply today, from Victoria Police's own pages.
Victoria Police's page on prior interstate and international policing experience says it recognises service as an operational police officer in Australia, New Zealand or the United Kingdom only. UK Special Constables and NZ non-commissioned officers are excluded. You must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
Victoria Police eligibility (all applicants)
- ✓ Aged 18 or over, no upper age limit.
- ✓ Australian citizen or permanent resident; New Zealand citizens on a special category visa.
- ✓ No minimum education requirement.
- ✓ Full or probationary Australian driver licence (no learner permits), with no more than 7 demerit points at application.
- ✓ First aid HLTAID010 or HLTAID011 before induction, valid for 12 months after training.
- ✓ Drug testing, with zero tolerance for illicit drug use.
Recognised officers still apply through the standard process. You may be exempted from the entrance exam, but background checks, medical, psychological testing and the panel interview still apply. Your training is then set by a skills gap analysis, called an Individual Training and Assessment Plan. Victoria Police says recent changes have been made to training requirements and asks applicants to contact its recruitment team for details.
Ask before you plan
Victoria Police's prior policing team is listed as hrd-prior-policing-mgr@police.vic.gov.au or (03) 8335 6100. If you already hold residency, ask what your training plan and pay point would be. Our UK police to Victoria Police guide walks through the current process step by step.
Victoria Police is also recruiting retired officers as reservists. ABC reported in August 2026 that applicants need at least two years' prior service in Australia, New Zealand or the UK. The residency rule still applies.

By our calculation, Constable point 1 on $84,060 takes home about $2,563 a fortnight after 2026-27 tax and the Medicare levy, and Senior Constable point 5 on $102,648 about $3,049. Victoria Police and PSOs are in the ESSS defined benefit super scheme. The Victoria Police salary guide has every point and allowance.

Is $5,000 enough to move to Victoria?
What the allowance would and wouldn't cover.
$5,000 is a contribution, not a relocation package. For context, WA's FAQ values the main applicant's subclass 186 visa at A$6,140, and lists A$3,070 for each extra adult and A$1,535 for each child. On those figures, $5,000 is about 81% of one main applicant's visa charge, before flights, shipping, medicals, police certificates or bond and rent. We've calculated that share ourselves.
What $5,000 might help with
- ✓Part of a family's flights
- ✓Temporary accommodation while you find a rental
- ✓Some shipping or storage costs
What it's unlikely to cover
- ✕Visa charges for a family, unless a scheme pays them separately
- ✕Rental bond and advance rent in Melbourne
- ✕Medicals, police certificates and document costs
- ✕Income gaps if your start date slips
The Coalition hasn't said whether the $5,000 would sit alongside visa reimbursement, as WA's does, or replace it. It also hasn't said whether it would be repayable if you leave early. Those terms make a big difference. Our UK police to Australia timeline lists the real costs of a move.
If it happens: a realistic timeline
Our estimate, based on WA's experience. Not a promise from anyone.
Even if the Coalition wins, a working program would take time. WA's campaign launch in October 2022 was followed by its first squad in September 2023, about 11 months later, and WA already had a labour agreement in place at launch. Victoria would be starting from scratch.

- 2
Late 2026 to 2027
Our estimateA new government would need to fund the program in a budget and negotiate a visa route with the Commonwealth.
- 3
Publication of terms
Not scheduledEligibility, age limit, course length, pay point and the $5,000 conditions would need to be published before applications open.
- 4

Not scheduledOnline assessments, vetting, medicals and visa processing. WA's selection takes months.
- 5

Our estimateIf WA is any guide, likely a year or more after launch.
If your UK career, pension or family plans have a deadline, that timeline matters. A two-year wait could take you past an age limit or out of the 'recent service' window that WA and others use.
What happens if Labor wins?
No overseas pledge, but the current rules stay.
Premier Ben Carroll's Labor government announced its police pledges on 13 September 2026: 1,500 extra police, a second police academy in Wyndham, and fast-tracking for Defence veterans and PSOs. They don't include an overseas recruitment program or relocation money.

All three nominate you for the permanent subclass 186 visa (Labour Agreement stream). Sources: WA Let's Join Forces international pages, SAPOL international applicants page and FAQ, QPS recruiting pages, as summarised on our UK officers guide on 9 October 2026. Terms change; confirm with the force.
In plain terms: you can't apply for a points-tested skilled visa on the strength of being a police officer, and an ordinary employer can't sponsor you as one through the standard streams. That's why the forces that recruit overseas officers do it through their own labour agreements with the Australian Government.

Frequently asked questions
Is Victoria Police recruiting UK police officers?
Not through a sponsored scheme. Victoria Police recognises prior service from UK police officers, but only for applicants who are already Australian citizens or permanent residents. The plan to recruit about 1,500 experienced officers from the UK, Ireland and New Zealand is a Liberal–Nationals election pledge for Saturday 28 November 2026, not a current Victoria Police program.
What is the $5,000 Victoria Police relocation allowance?
It's part of the Coalition's April 2026 pledge. ABC News and AAP reported that experienced officers from the UK, Ireland and New Zealand would be offered $5,000 to relocate. It isn't available now, and it would only exist if the Coalition wins the election and then sets up the program. How and when it would be paid hasn't been published.
Do I need a visa to join Victoria Police from the UK?
Yes. Victoria Police requires Australian citizenship or permanent residency (or New Zealand citizenship on a Special Category Visa). Police officer isn't on the main skilled lists for independent visas, so forces that recruit overseas use labour agreements with the Commonwealth. Victoria doesn't have one, and the Coalition hasn't said how it would arrange visas.
How does the WA Police UK recruitment scheme work?
WA Police uses a five-year labour agreement to sponsor serving UK and Irish officers for a permanent subclass 186 visa. You need at least three years' service by visa nomination and to be under 55. You do a 13-week paid course at Joondalup and start on Constable 4th or 5th year pay depending on your service. The first squad began in September 2023.
Would UK officers keep their rank in Victoria?
Nothing has been published. Victoria Police's current prior-service rules set your training through a skills gap analysis and don't publish a starting pay point. In WA's scheme, service is recognised up to Constable 5th year whatever your UK rank. Until the Coalition or Victoria Police publishes terms, assume you'd start as a constable.
Can New Zealand police officers join Victoria Police now?
Yes, in many cases. NZ citizens living in Australia on a Special Category Visa can apply to Victoria Police today, and Victoria recognises operational NZ police service, excluding non-commissioned officers. For NZ officers, the Coalition's pledge would mainly add the $5,000 relocation allowance and faster processing.
When would Victoria start recruiting UK officers if the Coalition wins?
No date has been announced. A program would likely need funding in a budget, a labour agreement with the Commonwealth, and published eligibility, pay and training terms. For comparison, WA launched its campaign in October 2022 and its first international squad started training in September 2023, about 11 months later.
What happens to the UK recruitment plan if Labor wins?
It wouldn't go ahead. Labor's police pledges, announced on 13 September 2026, are 1,500 extra police, a second academy in Wyndham, and fast-tracking for Defence veterans and PSOs. They don't include overseas recruitment. Victoria Police's current rules, which recognise UK service for citizens and permanent residents, would continue.
