Can a UK police officer join Victoria Police?
Yes with residency, no without it.
Verdict, checked 9 October 2026: UK service recognised, but no visa route
As of 9 October 2026, Victoria Police will recognise prior service from operational UK police officers, but only for applicants who already hold Australian citizenship or permanent residency. Victoria Police doesn't sponsor visas, and the $5,000 relocation allowance for UK officers you may have read about is an Opposition election pledge for the 28 November 2026 state election, not a Victoria Police program.
Victoria sits in the middle. Unlike NSW, Tasmania or the NT, it explicitly names the United Kingdom as a country whose police service it recognises. Unlike WA, SA and Queensland, it doesn't hold a labour agreement that lets it nominate you for a visa. So the question for you is simply: do you already have the right to live in Australia?

How Victoria Police recognises prior UK service
What the 'prior interstate and international policing experience' rules actually say.
Victoria Police's page on prior policing experience (last updated 12 December 2025) is the clearest statement of its position. It recognises service as an operational police officer in Australia, New Zealand or the United Kingdom, and says it doesn't award recognition from any other jurisdiction.

Note what "recognition" means here. There's no lateral transfer between Australian forces, and there's no transfer from a UK force either. You apply, you're assessed like other applicants with some stages possibly waived, and then your training is shortened according to what you already know. Rank doesn't come with you.
Get your terms in writing
Victoria doesn't publish a course length or starting pay point for recognised officers. Ask the prior policing team what your Individual Training and Assessment Plan would look like and where you'd sit on the pay scale before you resign from anything.
Citizenship and the other entry rules
The residency rule is the one that stops most UK officers.
Victoria Police's eligibility page (updated 26 September 2026) says you must be an Australian citizen or hold Australian permanent residency. New Zealand citizens can apply if they live in Australia and hold a Special Category Visa before they start. There's no mention of any temporary visa being acceptable.
Victoria Police entry requirements
- ✓ Aged 18 or over, no upper age limit.
- ✓ Australian citizen or permanent resident; New Zealand citizens on a special category visa.
- ✓ No minimum education requirement.
- ✓ Full or probationary Australian driver licence (no learner permits), with no more than 7 demerit points at application.
- ✓ First aid HLTAID010 or HLTAID011 before induction, valid for 12 months after training.
- ✓ Drug testing, with zero tolerance for illicit drug use.
There's no upper age limit and no minimum education, which is good news for experienced officers. You'll need an Australian licence and current Australian first aid units. The same page notes that some specialist commands, including Crime Command and Counter Terrorism Command, need an Australian Government security clearance, which requires citizenship and a checkable background, so those roles would wait until you're a citizen.
See our Victoria Police joining guide for every stage and the Victoria Police entrance exam guide in case you don't get an exemption.
The $5,000 overseas recruit pledge: what it is and isn't
An election promise, flagged plainly.
In April 2026 the Victorian Liberal Opposition announced a plan for 3,000 extra police over four years, with half of them experienced officers from the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand, each offered a $5,000 relocation allowance. ABC News reported that recruits would still go through parts of academy training and that dedicated teams would fast-track checks.

A promise of $5,000 is not a visa. Until a Victorian government creates a sponsored pathway, UK officers still need residency before Victoria Police can hire them.
Even if it happens, the details matter more than the headline. A real pathway would need a way to get you a visa (which Victoria Police doesn't have today), published training and pay terms, and age and service rules. The same ABC report noted that WA's overseas drive fell well short of its target and that some applicants hit visa problems. We'll check what the next government does after the election; sign up below if you want to hear.
The PSO route: a way in, but not around the visa
Protective Services Officers need residency too.
Some UK officers ask whether becoming a Protective Services Officer is an easier way in. It isn't easier on residency: Victoria Police's PSO entry requirements (updated 10 June 2026) also say you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or an NZ citizen with a Special Category Visa.

Once you have residency, though, the PSO route has real advantages. The academy is short, you're paid from day one, and PSOs can convert to police officer through the Constable Qualifying Program onto a Constable increment that matches their PSO salary (EA cl 75.1). Labor's 2026 election pledge also promised to fast-track PSO applications to become police. Our Victoria Police PSO guide covers the role, pay and training in full.
Why a UK officer with PR might choose PSO first
- ✓12-week academy and pay from $77,508.
- ✓A defined route to constable.
- ✓Gets you into the organisation quickly.
Why you might not
- ✕Still needs citizenship or PR.
- ✕PSO duties are narrower than general duties policing.
- ✕Prior-service recognition as a police officer may be the better deal; ask before choosing.

Our assessment from Victoria Police's published rules and the sponsoring forces' terms, read 9 October 2026. General information, not migration advice.
For most serving UK officers without residency, the realistic plan is the stepping stone: a sponsored role in WA, SA or Queensland, which gives you permanent residency on the subclass 186 visa from the day it's granted. After that you can apply to Victoria with both your UK and Australian service. Moving between forces always means a fresh application; see our interstate transfer guide.

For a sense of scale, Constable point 1 on $84,060 takes home about $2,563 a fortnight after 2026-27 tax and the Medicare levy, and Senior Constable point 5 on $102,648 about $3,049, by our calculation. Retired officers with at least two years' service in Australia, NZ or the UK are also being recruited as police reservists on $86,188 full time, according to ABC reporting; check the residency rules on Victoria Police's reservist pages.
Victoria Police and PSOs are in the ESSS Police Superannuation defined benefit scheme rather than a percentage contribution. See the Victoria police salary guide for allowances and the full scale.
Compare Victoria with the forces that sponsor UK officers
Line up Victoria against WA, SA and Queensland stage by stage before you choose where to start.
Visas: why Victoria Police can't sponsor you today
Policy and migration law, in brief.
Victoria Police requires citizenship or permanent residency, so it has nothing to nominate you for. And you can't easily get there on your own as a police officer.
Home Affairs' combined skilled occupation list (read on 9 October 2026) shows Police Officer (ANZSCO 441312) only against the RSMS ROL, the list for the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187). It isn't on the Core Skills Occupation List, the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, the Short-term list or the Regional Occupation List, which are the lists behind the points-tested 189, 190 and 491 visas, the 482 Core Skills stream and the 186 Direct Entry stream.
In plain terms: you can't apply for a points-tested skilled visa on the strength of being a police officer, and an ordinary employer can't sponsor you as one through the standard streams. That's why the forces that recruit overseas officers do it through their own labour agreements with the Australian Government.
That's also why any future Victorian overseas program would need a labour agreement or similar arrangement before it could bring UK officers in, which is the piece the April 2026 pledge didn't spell out. Home Affairs' general residence requirement for citizenship by conferral is 4 years living in Australia on a valid visa immediately before you apply, including the last 12 months as a permanent resident, with no more than 12 months away in total and no more than 90 days in the last year. You only need citizenship in Victoria for the specialist roles that require a security clearance.

Melbourne's climate and city life are the closest thing in Australia to a big UK city, which is part of Victoria's appeal for British officers. Housing costs vary widely between Melbourne suburbs and regional centres, so check current rents for where you'd likely be posted.
Your UK pension
Leaving a UK force normally means a deferred pension. Get a benefit statement first and read Police Pay UK; our UK officers guide explains why transfers out are restricted.

Frequently asked questions
Can UK police officers join Victoria Police?
Yes, if you're already an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Victoria Police recognises prior service from operational police officers in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, excluding UK Special Constables. It doesn't sponsor visas, so a serving UK officer without residency can't apply directly. WA, SAPOL and Queensland do sponsor UK officers.
Is the $5,000 Victoria Police relocation offer for UK officers real?
It's an election promise, not a current offer. In April 2026 the Liberal Opposition pledged 3,000 extra police, including 1,500 experienced recruits from the UK, Ireland and New Zealand with a $5,000 relocation allowance. It would only happen if the Liberals win the 28 November 2026 election and then implement it. Labor's police pledges made no overseas promise.
Does Victoria Police sponsor visas?
No. Victoria Police's eligibility page says you must be an Australian citizen or hold Australian permanent residency to join, with New Zealand citizens eligible on a Special Category Visa. Its PSO pages say the same. There is no Victoria Police labour agreement for overseas officers that we could find.
Do UK police officers have to sit the Victoria Police entrance exam?
Possibly not. Victoria Police says applicants with recognised experience may be exempted from the entrance exam if the experience is from the past five years or they're currently employed in Australian, New Zealand or UK policing, at the discretion of its Recruiting Services Branch. Otherwise the ACER exam costs $284.
How long is Victoria Police training for UK officers?
It isn't published. Victoria Police says recognised officers go through a skills gap analysis that produces an Individual Training and Assessment Plan, and that recent changes have been made to training requirements, but it doesn't state a course length or starting pay point. Ask its prior policing team before you commit.
Can I become a Victoria Police PSO from the UK?
Not without residency. Victoria Police's PSO entry requirements also say you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or an NZ citizen with a Special Category Visa. Once you have residency, the PSO route offers a 12-week academy, pay from $77,508 and a Constable Qualifying Program to become a police officer later.
What does a Victoria Police constable earn in 2026?
From 1 June 2026, Victoria Police pays recruits $61,187 during training and Constable point 1 $84,060, which already includes the 13% commuted penalty. First Constable runs from $90,399 and Senior Constable from $102,648 to $118,945, before newer allowances such as Operational Readiness.
Do I need security clearance to join Victoria Police?
Not for general duties. Victoria Police says certain specialist areas, such as Crime Command and Counter Terrorism Command, need an Australian Government security clearance, which requires Australian citizenship and a checkable background. As a permanent resident you could join, but those units would wait until you're a citizen.
