Can a UK police officer join Tasmania Police?
Not directly. Here's the plain position.
Verdict, checked 9 October 2026: no current UK pathway
As of 9 October 2026, Tasmania Police has no pathway for serving UK officers. Its Accelerated Training Program (ATP) is for current or recent sworn members of Australian or New Zealand forces, the next ATP is anticipated in early to mid 2027, and every applicant must already be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or an Australian permanent resident.
We read Tasmania Police's recruitment site end to end. Its "Experienced Officers" section offers two programs, the Accelerated Training Program and a Re-Engagement Training Program for former Tasmanian officers, and neither mentions the UK or overseas service. There's no labour agreement and no visa sponsorship.

That doesn't mean Tasmania is closed to you for good. It means you need to get the right to live in Australia first, and the best way for most serving officers is through one of the three forces that do sponsor UK police. Our guide for UK officers moving to Australia covers those forces in depth, and the overseas officers hub covers every country and force.
The Accelerated Training Program, and why UK service doesn't count
Twelve weeks for experienced police, but only Australian and New Zealand ones.
Tasmania's ATP is one of the more generous lateral-entry schemes in Australia: a 12-week course covering Tasmanian legislation, procedures, physical training, firearms and operational safety, then six months' probation, with pay that recognises up to 12 years' experience. The catch for you is the first line of its eligibility.

Nothing on the page suggests discretion for overseas services. And because the ATP runs as occasional intakes rather than continuously, even an Australian officer may wait months for the next one.
What isn't published
Tasmania doesn't say whether UK years would count towards your pay level if you later qualify through Australian service. Ask Tasmania Police recruiting before you rely on it.
Tasmania Police's eligibility rules for every applicant
What you'd need to meet as a recruit or an ATP applicant.
Tasmania Police entry requirements
- ✓ Apply from 17.5 years; must be 18 before starting the recruit course; no upper age limit (compulsory retirement at 65).
- ✓ Australian or NZ citizen, or Australian permanent resident (visa subclasses 100, 189, 190, 191 listed).
- ✓ Education: left school after 2020, Year 12 or Certificate III; left before 2020, Year 10 with a C pass in Maths and English (Certificate II in General Education for Adults accepted).
- ✓ Current Australian driver licence (provisional accepted).
- ✓ First Aid Certificate with HLTAID009, HLTAID010 and HLTAID011.
- ✓ Swimming certification from Royal Life Saving Australia or AUSTSWIM.
- ✓ No visible tattoos on neck, face, scalp, ears or hands; no offensive tattoos; no ear spacers.
- ✓ Undischarged bankrupts are ineligible; discharged bankrupts can apply after 3 years.
- ✓ Zero tolerance for illicit drug use; all offences (including juvenile) must be disclosed.
- ✓ No AI (e.g. ChatGPT) may be used for written answers; random checks apply.
- ✓ Colour vision: must pass the Farnsworth D-15.
Three of these need planning if you're coming from the UK. You must convert your UK licence to an Australian one before you apply. You need Australian first aid units (HLTAID009, 010 and 011) and a swimming certificate from Royal Life Saving Australia or AUSTSWIM, so UK certificates won't count. And Tasmania's tattoo rule (nothing visible on the neck, face, scalp, ears or hands) is stricter than many UK forces'.
Our Tasmania Police joining guide walks through every stage, and the Tasmania fitness test guide covers the traffic-light fitness standards.
The realistic routes from a UK force to Tasmania
Pick the one that matches your residency position today.
1. Another force first, then the ATP
- How it works
- Join WA, SAPOL or Queensland on a sponsored 186 visa; after probation plus 2 years, apply for the next ATP
- Time to a Tasmanian role (our estimate)
- About 3 years, plus waiting for an ATP intake
- Credit for experience
- Pay level for up to 12 years (Australian service certainly; UK years not confirmed)
2. Permanent residency, then recruit
- How it works
- Get PR through a non-police route, then apply as a Trainee Constable
- Time to a Tasmanian role (our estimate)
- Depends on the visa; Tasmania's process takes 8 to 12 weeks
- Credit for experience
- None: 28-week course on trainee pay
3. NZ citizenship
- How it works
- Only if you already hold it
- Time to a Tasmanian role (our estimate)
- As per a normal application
- Credit for experience
- None unless you have Australian or NZ police service
| Route | How it works | Time to a Tasmanian role (our estimate) | Credit for experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Another force first, then the ATP | Join WA, SAPOL or Queensland on a sponsored 186 visa; after probation plus 2 years, apply for the next ATP | About 3 years, plus waiting for an ATP intake | Pay level for up to 12 years (Australian service certainly; UK years not confirmed) |
| 2. Permanent residency, then recruit | Get PR through a non-police route, then apply as a Trainee Constable | Depends on the visa; Tasmania's process takes 8 to 12 weeks | None: 28-week course on trainee pay |
| 3. NZ citizenship | Only if you already hold it | As per a normal application | None unless you have Australian or NZ police service |
Timings are our estimates from published course lengths, probation and the ATP's service rule.
Route 1 is the one we'd look at first. It puts you in paid policing from day one, gives you permanent residency, and earns the Australian service the ATP asks for. It also lets you test Australian life before choosing Tasmania's smaller, quieter policing environment.
Tasmania won't recognise UK service through the ATP, but it will recognise two post-probation years in WA, SA or Queensland.
Route 1: join a sponsoring force, then the ATP
The stepping-stone route, step by step.
Three forces nominate serving UK officers for the permanent subclass 186 visa. Their age rules differ sharply, so match yourself against them first.
WA Police
- Who qualifies
- Serving UK and Irish officers, 2 years 8 months+ operational service (3 years by nomination); not BTP or military police
- Age
- Under 55 at visa nomination
- Course
- 13 weeks, Joondalup
- Starting point
- Up to Constable 5th year ($102,263)
SAPOL

- Age
- Under 45 at visa application
- Course
- 15 weeks, Taperoo

- Age
- Under 54 at recruitment application
- Course
- 18 to 20 weeks
- Starting point
- $20,000 relocation incentive; pay set by service
| Force | Who qualifies | Age | Course | Starting point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WA Police | Serving UK and Irish officers, 2 years 8 months+ operational service (3 years by nomination); not BTP or military police | Under 55 at visa nomination | 13 weeks, Joondalup | Up to Constable 5th year ($102,263) |

| Queensland (PACE) | International police with 3+ years' full-time service incl. 24 months operational | Under 54 at recruitment application | 18 to 20 weeks | $20,000 relocation incentive; pay set by service |
All three nominate you for the permanent subclass 186 visa (Labour Agreement stream). Sources: WA Let's Join Forces international pages, SAPOL international applicants page and FAQ, QPS recruiting pages, as summarised on our UK officers guide on 9 October 2026. Terms change; confirm with the force.

Year 3+Watch for the intake (anticipated early to mid 2027 for the next one), then 12 weeks at the Academy and 6 months' probation.
Moving between Australian forces always means resigning from one and being selected by the other; see our interstate transfer guide. And because Tasmania only accepts officers who left less than four years ago, don't take a long break between forces.
Route 2: join as a Trainee Constable once you have residency
The direct route, at the cost of starting again.
If you already have Australian permanent residency (on one of the listed subclasses) or NZ citizenship, you can apply as a recruit today. Tasmania runs a rolling expression of interest, and listed intakes include 5 October 2026, 11 January 2027 and 22 March 2027.
Trainee Constable
$61,801
$63,655 from 1 December 2026
Constable Level 1

with 28% allowance (calc)
Process
8–12 weeks
application to offer
The 28-week course at the Rokeby academy includes six weeks' practical training at a station and 15 of the 24 units of a UTAS Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies). Board is $225 a fortnight if you live in. You'd then serve your first year on probation and spend at least two years at a 24/7 station.
At a 24-hour station, Level 1 with the 28% shift and penalty allowance is about $94,103, which takes home roughly $2,826 a fortnight after 2026-27 tax and the Medicare levy, by our calculation.
Why the recruit route can work
- ✓No upper age limit.
- ✓Rolling intakes, several a year.
- ✓Part of a university degree built into training.
What it costs you
- ✕No credit for UK service.
- ✕Trainee pay of $61,801 for 28 weeks.
- ✕You must hold residency on an eligible visa first.
Tasmania Police pay and how experience is recognised
Rates from 1 December 2025, read from our data file.
Tasmania publishes an unusually precise rule for experienced officers. During the ATP you're paid two levels below your experience, during probation one level below, and after probation at your experience level, up to a maximum of Constable Level 12. We've applied that rule to the current pay scale below.

Calculated by us from Tasmania Police's published ATP rule and the award rates from 1 December 2025. Tasmania's own examples (5 and 15 years) match this table. Base salary only; a 28% shift and penalty allowance applies at 24-hour stations.
Five years' Australian or NZ service on the ATP: Level 3: $78,426 in training, Level 4: $80,875 on probation, then Level 5: $83,326.
A Level 5 constable on $83,326 base takes home about $2,544 a fortnight by our calculation, before the shift allowance. Employer super is the 12% Superannuation Guarantee. The full scale, including Sergeant and Inspector levels, is in our Tasmania police salary guide, and scheduled rises are on the Tasmania pay deal page.

Visas and residency: what Tasmania requires
Why there's no visa route into Tasmania Police today.
Tasmania's entry requirements say you must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or have Australian permanent resident status, and list visa subclasses 100, 189, 190 and 191 as eligible. That list is worth noticing: the subclass 186 that WA, SA and Queensland use isn't on it, even though it's a permanent visa. If you arrive on a 186, confirm with Tasmania recruiting before you apply.
Home Affairs' combined skilled occupation list (read on 9 October 2026) shows Police Officer (ANZSCO 441312) only against the RSMS ROL, the list for the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187). It isn't on the Core Skills Occupation List, the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, the Short-term list or the Regional Occupation List, which are the lists behind the points-tested 189, 190 and 491 visas, the 482 Core Skills stream and the 186 Direct Entry stream.
In plain terms: you can't apply for a points-tested skilled visa on the strength of being a police officer, and an ordinary employer can't sponsor you as one through the standard streams. That's why the forces that recruit overseas officers do it through their own labour agreements with the Australian Government.

Home Affairs' general residence requirement for citizenship by conferral is 4 years living in Australia on a valid visa immediately before you apply, including the last 12 months as a permanent resident, with no more than 12 months away in total and no more than 90 days in the last year. Citizenship removes any doubt about visa subclasses, but it's a longer road.
Life, postings and family in Tasmania
Smaller force, smaller state, different trade-offs.
Graduates are posted to a 24/7 station, such as Hobart, Glenorchy, Bridgewater, Bellerive, Launceston, Devonport or Burnie, for at least two years. Designated country and rural stations come with a rent-free departmental residence. For many UK officers, Tasmania's appeal is the climate and pace of life, which is closer to home than the tropics of the NT or Queensland.

Frequently asked questions
Does Tasmania Police recruit officers from the UK?
Not as of 9 October 2026. Tasmania's Accelerated Training Program is limited to sworn officers from Australia or New Zealand, and its recruitment site has no overseas or UK pathway. All applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents, and Tasmania doesn't sponsor visas. UK officers with residency can apply as recruits.
What is the Tasmania Police Accelerated Training Program?
The ATP is a 12-week course for sworn officers with at least two years' post-probation service in Australia or New Zealand, who left less than four years ago (six if they've stayed in a related law enforcement role). Rank doesn't transfer, probation is six months, and pay reflects up to 12 years' experience. Tasmania anticipates the next ATP in early to mid 2027.
Does my UK police service count in Tasmania?
Not for the ATP, which only accepts Australian and New Zealand sworn members. If you join as a recruit, the published pages don't describe any credit for overseas service, so assume you'd start as a Trainee Constable on $61,801. If you later qualify for the ATP through Australian service, ask whether UK years count towards your pay level; Tasmania doesn't say.
Can I apply to Tasmania Police on a 186 visa?
Tasmania's entry requirements say you must be an Australian or NZ citizen or an Australian permanent resident, and list visa subclasses 100, 189, 190 and 191 as eligible. The 186 is a permanent visa but isn't in that list, so if you hold one, confirm your eligibility with Tasmania Police recruiting before you apply.
How much does a Tasmania Police constable earn?
From 1 December 2025, Constable Level 1 is $73,518 base, rising to $101,487 at Level 12, with two further Level 13 points above that. At a 24-hour station the 28% shift and penalty allowance lifts Level 1 to about $94,103 by our calculation. Trainee Constables earn $61,801 during the 28-week course.
Is there an age limit for Tasmania Police?
There's no upper age limit to apply. You can apply from 17.5 and must be 18 before the course starts, and compulsory retirement is at 65. That makes Tasmania more open to older applicants than SAPOL's international program, which requires you to be under 45 at visa application.
What's the fastest route from a UK force to Tasmania Police?
By our reading, join WA Police, SAPOL or the Queensland Police Service on a sponsored 186 visa, complete probation, then serve two years after probation. That meets the ATP's service rule, and you'd hold permanent residency. Allow around three years from your first application, depending on the visa, your first force's probation and when Tasmania runs an ATP.
Do I need to convert my UK driving licence before applying to Tasmania Police?
Yes. Tasmania's entry requirements say applicants with an overseas licence must convert it to an Australian licence before submitting an application, and anyone who has held an interstate licence must provide a driving history record from that state's transport authority.
