Can a UK officer transfer to South Australia Police?
Yes, and SAPOL has taken more than 200 experienced officers through its Transition Program.
SAPOL's Transition Program takes experienced officers from approved overseas services and from interstate. You're appointed as a Probationary Constable, trained for 15 weeks instead of the 9 to 11 months new recruits do, then posted as a General Duties member in a metropolitan district or regional Local Service Area.

SAPOL reported in October 2026 that 207 officers have now graduated through the SAPOL Transition Program in two years, averaging 8+ years' frontline experience, with 43 serving regionally. STP Course 11 includes Met Police officers posted to Coober Pedy. This page builds on our overview for UK officers moving to Australia with the full SAPOL detail.
Checked on SAPOL's own pages
Rules come from SAPOL's international applicants page and FAQ, read on 9 October 2026. Parts of the FAQ are dated (it still says courses "will commence from mid 2024" and refers to offers "in 2024"), so confirm current course dates with SAPOL's recruitment team.
Who's eligible for SAPOL's Transition Program?
Approved services, 3 years' continuous service and the visa age limit.
SAPOL international eligibility
- ✓ Police officer or British Transport Police officer in the UK (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland)
- ✓ Or: Guernsey, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, or Canada's RCMP, Ontario Provincial Police, Toronto, Hamilton or Winnipeg police services
- ✓ At least 3 years' continuous and active service in the last 5, not counting initial training
- ✓ Under 45 when you submit and pay for the 186 visa application (UK, Guernsey, Irish and Canadian applicants)
- ✓ A current full driving licence (UK, Irish, Canadian or equivalent)
- ✓ Pass SAPOL's assessments: interviews, testing, psych, medical and a Functional Capacity Assessment
- ✓ Tattoos within policy: sleeves are fine; nothing on the ears, face, head, scalp or front and sides of the neck
- ✓ Family members on your visa must meet Home Affairs' health and character requirements
Excluded: the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and military or defence force police. Special Constables aren't mentioned on SAPOL's pages; ask the recruitment team if that's you.
'Continuous and active' has a precise meaning
SAPOL excludes any unpaid leave of 14 days or more from the calculation, and treats more than 12 months' unpaid absence as a break in service that doesn't count. If you've had a career break or long unpaid leave, work out your continuous active service before you apply.
What your UK service counts as in SAPOL
100% credit, capped at 7 years, for probation and Constable increments.
SAPOL acknowledges 100% of your continuous and active service with an approved service at the point of permanent appointment, up to 7 years. It uses that credit for two things: setting your probation (6, 9 or 12 months) and advancing your pay increments at the rank of Constable.

More than 7 years

- As above; the cap applies to probation length and Constable increments
Substantive Sergeant or above (not acting)

| More than 7 years | Capped at 7 years' credit | As above; the cap applies to probation length and Constable increments |
| Substantive Sergeant or above (not acting) | Eligible to apply for Senior Constable | Senior Constable Increment 1: $102,990 after probation |
Source: SAPOL international applicants page and FAQ, read 9 October 2026. Pay from SAPOL's published rates from 1 January 2026. SAPOL publishes only the lowest and highest increment of each rank, so the increment you'll land on between $86,125 and $102,491 isn't published; ask SAPOL to confirm it in writing.
Rank doesn't transfer, with one exception. If you held the substantive rank of Sergeant or above (acting or relieving doesn't count), you can apply to be appointed Senior Constable once you finish probation. The Senior Constable scale runs from $102,990 to $117,542; Sergeant starts at $122,740.
SAPOL credits up to 7 years of UK service, but pays everyone $83,398 until probation ends.
For promotion and specialist roles after that, you go through SAPOL's merit-based processes, including study and exams, where your previous experience may be considered. See our SA police promotion guide and the wider UK rank and service recognition guide.
What you'd earn in SA, after tax
Probationary Constable pay first, then your Constable increment.
SAPOL's FAQ gives the Probationary Constable rate as $83,398 a year plus superannuation from 1 January 2026, with shift allowances on top. Many general duties members work SAPOL's Response Extended Hours Roster, which carries an all-inclusive allowance of 23% of base salary under the enterprise agreement.

Calculated by us with 2026-27 resident tax rates and the 2% Medicare levy, no HELP debt. Whether the 23% allowance applies depends on your roster; check whether it replaces other shift loadings for you. Not every transition officer reaches Increment 7.
Super is on top: SA officers get at least the 12% Superannuation Guarantee through Super SA's Triple S scheme, which SAPOL says is compulsory for police. A proposed new enterprise agreement would add 4% from January 2027; PASA announced its terms on 16 September 2026, and it's subject to a member vote and approval, so it isn't in force yet.
How that compares with UK pay
The England and Wales constable scale topped out at £50,256 from 1 September 2025, and Police Pay UK calculates £52,015 for 2026/27. As an illustration only, at A$1 = £0.5270 (RBA, 9 October 2026) those are about A$95,362 and A$98,700. Exchange rates move and conversions ignore tax, pension and living costs; our UK vs Australia police pay guide does the full comparison.

The 186 visa and SAPOL's age limit
Permanent residency for you and your family, nominated by SAPOL.
SAPOL has a labour agreement that lets it recruit officers from the UK, Guernsey, Ireland and Canada without them already being citizens or permanent residents. It nominates you for the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa, Labour Agreement stream, which Home Affairs describes as letting you live, work and study in Australia indefinitely.

SAPOL's age limit is ten years lower than WA's and Queensland's. If you're 44, timing matters: the cut-off is when you lodge and pay for the visa, which comes after at least 8 weeks of assessments. Our visa guide for police officers explains the 186 in more depth.
What it costs you, and what SAPOL pays back
The most generous visa reimbursement of any force, but no relocation cash for UK recruits.
On commencement of employment, SAPOL reimburses eligible costs of getting the 186 visa for you and dependent family members. SAPOL's FAQ lists those as the visa application, physical assessments and pre-medicals, and its international page adds police clearances. Specialist or non-standard medical assessments are excluded.

You'll need the cash to pay visa charges before you're reimbursed. For a family, that's likely to be several thousand dollars; check current charges with Home Affairs' visa pricing estimator. Our cost of living guide covers Adelaide rents and bills.
The 15-week transition program at Taperoo
Designed around your experience, paid from day one.
Training is at the SAPOL Academy on Strathfield Terrace, Taperoo, in Adelaide's north-western suburbs. SAPOL describes a 15-week streamlined transition program built for officers with prior experience: it reflects on what you already know and puts it in the South Australian context. SAPOL confirms your course place once your visa is approved.
What SAPOL says the program covers
- ✓ The first-responder policing role in South Australia
- ✓ SA legislation and procedures in context
- ✓ Police firearms training (general duties members carry firearms)
- ✓ Police vehicle driving
- ✓ Defensive tactics and operational equipment
- ✓ Holistic management of policing incidents
- ✓ Self-directed research and evaluation tasks
- ✓ Paid throughout as a Probationary Constable
Compare that with the domestic route: SAPOL's training page describes 9 to 11 months of recruit training. Our SAPOL Academy guide covers the Academy itself.
Where you'll be posted, and life in South Australia
You state preferences; SAPOL tells you your posting before you arrive.
SAPOL asks for your posting preferences (metropolitan, country or both) and says it considers personal circumstances. It aims to confirm your posting before you arrive. You'll join a patrol team on a 24/7 roster: mobile and foot patrols, radio taskings and preliminary investigations. Patrols generally go out in pairs, and the arresting patrol usually processes the prisoner and takes the file.

On pensions, SAPOL's FAQ points to the ATO's guidance on transferring foreign pension funds and recommends independent financial advice. In practice, UK police pensions are unfunded public service schemes, and transfers out are heavily restricted. Most officers keep a deferred UK pension and build Triple S super alongside it. Read your UK police pension in Australia and Police Pay UK's pension hub before you resign, and our moving with family guide for schools and childcare.

Frequently asked questions
Can UK police officers join SA Police?
Yes. SAPOL's Transition Program accepts police officers and British Transport Police officers from the UK (excluding the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and military or defence police), plus Guernsey, the Republic of Ireland, five Canadian services and New Zealand. You need 3+ years' continuous and active service in the last 5, excluding initial training, and a full driving licence.
What is the age limit for SAPOL international recruits?
Under 45 when you submit and pay for your visa application: SAPOL's FAQ says 44 years and 364 days. The limit comes from the 186 visa's Labour Agreement stream as it applies to SAPOL, and covers UK, Guernsey, Irish and Canadian applicants. New Zealand citizens don't need the 186 visa, so the visa age limit doesn't apply to them in the same way.
Does SAPOL accept British Transport Police officers?
Yes. SAPOL's FAQ says British Transport Police officers can apply and must meet the same eligibility criteria as other UK and Irish officers. That makes SAPOL the main option for BTP officers: WA Police excludes BTP. The Civil Nuclear Constabulary and military or defence police are excluded by SAPOL.
How much does SAPOL pay ex-UK officers?
During the 15-week course and probation you're paid as a Probationary Constable: $83,398 a year plus super from 1 January 2026, with shift allowances on top. After probation you're appointed at the Constable increment SAPOL sets from your credited service, on a scale from $86,125 to $102,491. Former substantive Sergeants can apply to start as Senior Constable.
Does SAPOL pay for my visa and my family's visas?
Yes, after you start. SAPOL reimburses eligible costs of getting the permanent 186 visa for you and dependent family members as Home Affairs defines them: the visa application charge, physical assessments and pre-medicals, and police clearances. Specialist or non-standard medical assessments aren't covered, and SAPOL doesn't publish a cash relocation payment for UK recruits.
Do I need to fly to Adelaide for SAPOL's selection process?
No. SAPOL says every stage for UK, Irish and Canadian officers can be completed remotely: a phone interview, personality, aptitude and literacy testing, a panel interview, and psychological and medical assessments. The Functional Capacity Assessment is run in your home country by an approved third-party provider, who contacts you directly.
How long is SAPOL's probation for transition officers?
Six, nine or twelve months, depending on how much prior service SAPOL credits you with. SAPOL asks for supporting documents to set the exact length. New recruits, by contrast, do 9 to 11 months of Academy training and a much longer development program, so experienced officers reach permanent appointment far sooner.
Can I become a detective in SAPOL after transferring from the UK?
Yes, but not straight away. You must finish probation and be permanently appointed, then complete the Investigation and Interviewing Techniques Course and the Detective Training Course, which are merit-selected and competitive. SAPOL says previous experience is considered. Successful members then complete a workbook to become a Designated Detective.
