SA Police Academy, Taperoo

The short answer

The SA Police Academy is in Taperoo, north-west of Adelaide's city centre. The SA Police Academy at a glance

Business-hours training, a hard graduation test and a course length to double-check.

SAPOL trains new officers as cadets at its Academy in Taperoo. The course runs in business hours, combines classroom law with practical tactics and driving, and ends with a fitness test every cadet must pass. SAPOL has also put more than 200 experienced police from interstate and overseas through a shorter transition course at the same Academy since early 2025.

The headline fact you'll find on many sites, that SA cut its academy to six months, comes from a 2019 announcement. SAPOL's current training page says nine to eleven months. We explain both below.

Taperoo, and accommodation for country and interstate cadets

SAPOL's Academy page puts it in Taperoo, north-west of Adelaide's city centre. The site is widely known as the former Fort Largs site; our research notes record a Strathfield Terrace address, which SAPOL's page doesn't state, and a search extract says the land was a defence site transferred to SAPOL in 1961.

Accommodation

A current Police Cadet job ad says on-site Academy accommodation may be available to approved applicants, subject to availability. SAPOL doesn't say whether living in is compulsory or what it costs, and we couldn't confirm either. Country and interstate recruits get a cost-of-living allowance of $4,531.28 when they start at the Academy. A search extract of a 2024 Hansard debate mentions on-site accommodation for a total of nine months, but we haven't confirmed it.

How long is SA Police Academy training?

Two SAPOL sources give different answers, and the gap matters for your budget.

SA Police Academy: published course lengths

SAPOL Training page (current)

What it says
Academy training usually takes between 9 and 11 months, depending on your pathway

Change to SAPOL recruit training (4 November 2019)

What it says
The Academy course, previously 12 months, cut to 6 months from mid-2020

Same 2019 release

What it says
Graduates then spend 3 months in continuous training within a 2-year probation; the Constable Development Program stays at 2.5 years

Ask SAPOL which length applies

The current training page is more recent than the 2019 release, so we treat nine to eleven months as the better guide. But our data file still records about six months, from a summary of the 2019 page. Ask SAPOL Recruiting how long your intake will spend at the Academy before you plan around it.

Plan for up to 11 months at Taperoo, not the 6 months quoted on older pages.

Exams and the fitness test you must pass to graduate

SAPOL says cadets sit theory and practical exams at the Academy. It doesn't publish pass marks, re-sit rules or what happens if you fail, so ask at induction.

The fit-for-duty test

This is SA's distinctive hurdle. The same test you sit to apply, done in a 10 kg vest, must also be passed to graduate, with a competitive time of under 2 minutes 30 seconds.

Not published: failure and remediation

SAPOL doesn't publish what happens if a cadet fails an exam or the fitness test, such as re-tests, moving to a later course or termination. Ask before you start.

Cadet pay at the Academy, and tax

Domestic recruits are paid as cadets: $71,872 a year from 1 January 2026. SAPOL's job ad gives the range as $71,872 to $83,398, from cadet to Probationary Constable. The December 2024 pay deal committed to abolishing junior cadet rates.

What a day at the Academy looks like

SAPOL gives the Academy hours as 8:30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings and study in your own time. That makes it one of the longer academy days in Australia.

What to expect (general guide)

  • ✓ An 8:30am start and a 5pm finish on weekdays
  • ✓ Classroom sessions in law, investigations and procedure
  • ✓ Practical sessions in searching, handcuffing, restraint and self-defence
  • ✓ Firearms on the Academy ranges
  • ✓ Driver training blocks
  • ✓ Scenario exercises in the training village
  • ✓ Occasional evening sessions and regular self-study

The hours are SAPOL's; the daily mix is our general summary of the published subjects, not an official timetable.

Graduation and your first posting

When you graduate you become a Probationary Constable. SAPOL's training page says you'll be posted to one of four metropolitan districts or elsewhere in the state, and you start as a general duties patrol officer.

Country service carries extra support through the Hard to Fill scheme: housing, storage, lifestyle payments ($3,334 Level 1; $7,902 Level 2), a remote allowance of up to $4,892 a year (Level 2) and a guaranteed posting afterwards (1 Jan 2024 rates). Our SA police salary guide explains it.

Country service: the Hard to Fill scheme

SAPOL graduates can be posted anywhere in the state, and the enterprise agreement pays extra for the hardest places to staff. If you're a country recruit, or open to the country, it's worth knowing what each level offers before you graduate.

SAPOL country incentives (rates from 1 January 2024)

Ceduna, Marla, Roxby Downs, Coober Pedy, Peterborough, Leigh Creek and other gazetted stations
What you get

Level 2

Where

What you get
45% loading (in lieu of penalties and overtime), up to $4,892 a year remote allowance, $7,902 lifestyle payment, rent-free housing, 5 extra days' leave and a guaranteed posting afterwards

Level 3

Where
Gazetted larger country stations
What you get
An attraction and retention payment (about $5,747 a year; the figure is unclear in the scanned agreement) and a guaranteed posting afterwards

One- and two-person stations

Where
Small country stations and CIBs
What you get
35% of base salary, inclusive of on-call and recall

From the SA Police Enterprise Agreement 2021, Schedule 3, via our SA data file. Whether these amounts rose after January 2024 isn't confirmed.

These apply after the Academy, not during it. The guaranteed posting afterwards is the part many officers value most, because it lets you plan a return to Adelaide once your country tenure ends. Our SA Police profile covers the scheme in more depth.

The 2019 release puts the total at a two-year probation within a two-and-a-half-year Constable Development Program. Our data notes that the domestic probation length comes from a summary and isn't verified, so treat it as a guide. After permanent appointment, promotion to Senior Constable is in situ five years later, subject to qualifying.

The 15-week transition course for experienced police

Australian officers with at least three years' continuous active service in the last five, and eligible officers from the UK, Ireland, Guernsey, New Zealand and Canada, do a 15-week transition course at the Academy in business hours. It covers firearms, police driving, defensive tactics and equipment.
