The verdict for South African officers
One possible sponsor, a strict English rule and no recognition elsewhere.
Short answer
Queensland is the only Australian force that could sponsor a SAPS officer. Its international route assesses whether your service is "comparable policing", case by case. You'd need an English test score, because a South African passport isn't on Queensland's list. No other force has a pathway, and none of them recognises SAPS service.
There's clear demand. When Queensland's labour agreement opened in 2023, AAP reported about 15,000 inquiries, with the most coming from the UK, Canada and South Africa. Queensland hasn't published how many South African officers it has since hired, so we can't tell you your odds.

If Queensland doesn't accept your service, the realistic route is to get permanent residence another way and then apply as a new recruit. That's slower and you'd start on recruit pay, but it opens every state force.
This page is general information, not migration advice. Visa rules change, and your history, family and health all matter. Before you resign or pay for anything, talk to a registered migration agent (you can check registration with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority) or read the Home Affairs page for the visa yourself.

The two other forces with overseas programs have chosen their countries. WA's covers the UK and Ireland (and NZ). SA's covers the UK, Ireland, Guernsey, New Zealand and five Canadian services. Victoria recognises only Australian, New Zealand and UK service and gives "significant differences in law, policies and procedures" as the reason.
Which Australian force would suit you?
Answer seven questions about pay, climate, location and lifestyle. Useful whether you're aiming for Queensland or planning the permanent-residence route.
Queensland's international route, in detail
Comparable policing, judged on your documents.
Queensland's labour agreement lets the QPS sponsor foreign police without them being citizens or permanent residents first. The Queensland Government called it "the broadest of its kind among Australia's policing jurisdictions" when it was announced in February 2023.

Source: QPS Recruiting international police recruitment page and FAQs, read 9 October 2026. QPS says the labour agreement allows 500 international recruits a year for five years from 2023. Its intake table hadn't been updated past May 2026 when we checked, so ask about current PACE dates.
QPS assesses your experience from a comparable-policing form, your résumé and supporting documents from your service. It weighs the nature and variety of your duties (especially general and frontline policing), your conduct and disciplinary history, your health, your rank and, if you've left, why and how long ago. Time serving must exceed time since separating.
Documents in Afrikaans or another language must be translated into English by a recognised expert and certified. Don't send documents until QPS asks for them. Our guide to joining the QPS covers the selection process.
The English test you'll almost certainly need
Proficient English, in every component.
Queensland requires "the appropriate level of English proficiency to be a QPS police officer, especially in terms of communicating in stressful operational situations". You prove it with a passport from the UK, the USA, Canada, New Zealand or Ireland, or with a Proficient English test score. As a South African citizen, you'd usually need the test.
IELTS (Academic or General Training)

- At least 7 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking
PTE Academic
- Proficient English (taken on or after 7 August 2025)

Source: Home Affairs Proficient English page, read 9 October 2026. Other approved tests are listed there. Scores must be met in each component, not on average.
QPS lets you use a remote test while you go through selection, but for the visa you must pass at an approved test venue, and QPS doesn't pay or reimburse test costs. A score of 7 in every band is demanding even for fluent English speakers, particularly in writing, so book a practice test early.
Fluent isn't the same as proven. Budget time and money for the test before you apply.
Which SAPS and metro service counts?
Sworn, frontline, full-time.
Queensland wants at least 3 years' full-time policing, including at least 24 months operational. Academy time counts for up to 12 months. If you've served part-time or as a volunteer, QPS says it must add up to the full-time equivalent. That's relevant if you've served as a SAPS reservist.
Likely to help your case
- ✓ Sworn service with SAPS or a municipal or metro police service
- ✓ General duties or visible policing, responding to complaints and incidents
- ✓ A clean conduct and disciplinary record
- ✓ Recent service: time serving must exceed time since leaving
- ✓ Specialist roles that still involve direct community contact
Queensland is explicit that security work doesn't count, so private security or guarding experience won't help, however long. Transport and military police "may be considered". Detective experience is welcome, but the designation doesn't transfer: you'd apply separately once you're in a plain-clothes position.
The visa: ENS subclass 186
Permanent residence, nominated by the QPS.
If Queensland accepts you, it nominates you under its labour agreement and you apply for the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa. It's permanent: you and any partner and dependent children included arrive as permanent residents, and QPS requires you to hold permanent residency before you start at the academy.
One fact shapes every route below: police officer isn't a skilled-visa occupation. When we searched the Home Affairs skilled occupation list for 'police' and 'detective' on 9 October 2026, it returned no results. So you can't get a points-tested skilled visa (such as the 189 or 190) as a police officer, and no Australian employer can sponsor you as one under the normal lists. The only employer-sponsored routes are the labour agreements that WA, SA and Queensland hold with the Australian Government.
Visa points for South African applicants
- ✓ Proficient English for the main applicant, from an approved venue
- ✓ Health checks for every family member; QPS warns significant health costs can sink a visa
- ✓ Character checks, including police clearances
- ✓ Under 55 at visa application (under 54 at recruitment application)
- ✓ QPS reimburses the main applicant's visa fee only, after training
- ✓ Don't resign from SAPS until the visa is granted
See our guide to Australian visas for police officers for the 186 in more depth.
How SAPS rank and service are recognised
Pay point yes, rank no, and only in Queensland.
If Queensland accepts you, your service earns a higher pay point than a new recruit's, reflecting length, recency and type of policing, especially general duties. Qualifications and designations don't add to it, and rank doesn't carry over. Warrant Officers and Captains should expect to start as constables.
Queensland
- Recognition of SAPS service
- Possible: higher pay point if your service is judged comparable
Victoria
- Recognition of SAPS service
- No: only Australian, NZ and UK service is recognised
WA and SA
- Recognition of SAPS service
- No: South Africa isn't in their transition programs
NSW, Tasmania, NT
- Recognition of SAPS service
- No: experienced-officer programs are for Australia and NZ only
AFP
- Recognition of SAPS service
- Australian citizens only
| Force | Recognition of SAPS service |

| Victoria | No: only Australian, NZ and UK service is recognised |
| WA and SA | No: South Africa isn't in their transition programs |

You'll also go through either the shortened PACE course or the full recruit course, depending on how recent and relevant your experience is. Either way, you'll learn Queensland law, police powers and procedures from scratch.
If Queensland isn't an option
Permanent residence first, then a fresh start.
If you're over the age limit, your service isn't judged comparable, or you can't reach the English score, the route is permanent residence through something other than policing: a partner visa, a skilled visa in another occupation you're qualified in, or another permanent pathway. A registered migration agent can tell you which, if any, fits.

Recruit and first-year figures are each force's headline rates from our data files, taken from the force's agreement or official pay page. NSW has no recruit salary: the first stage of its Associate Degree is unpaid and the Academy stage pays a weekly rate. NSW's first-year figure includes its 11.5% loading; Queensland's recruit figure is 70% of Constable 1.1, calculated by us from the agreement; SA's recruit figure is the domestic cadet rate. Allowances, shift penalties and super come on top.
With permanent residence you can apply to any state force as a new recruit, and most publish no upper age limit. Read our guide to becoming a police officer in Australia and the eligibility guide, and if you're starting a second career, our career change guide.

Base salary from the QPS Certified Agreement 2025 schedule in our data. QPS pays a 21% operational shift allowance to officers on operational shift rosters, plus employer super. Experienced international recruits are placed above a new recruit, case by case.
A Queensland officer on $78,505 takes home about $2,418 a fortnight after 2026-27 Australian tax and the Medicare levy, by our calculation, before the shift allowance. Serving or recently serving police can also get the $20,000 relocation incentive, paid in two $10,000 instalments and taxed.
We don't convert rand salaries, because the exchange rate, tax and living costs make a direct comparison misleading. Compare what you'd keep after rent in the districts Queensland is likely to post you to.

Healthcare, family and your SAPS pension
Practical points before you move.
Healthcare. South Africa has no reciprocal health care agreement with Australia; Services Australia lists 11 countries and South Africa isn't one. On a permanent 186 visa you can enrol in Medicare once you arrive. Hold private or travel cover for any earlier trips.
Family. A partner and dependent children can be included in the 186, and they arrive with the right to live, work and study. Queensland doesn't pay family visa costs. QPS allocates your district by operational need (the Sunshine Coast isn't available), so check schools and your partner's job prospects once you know your posting.
Your pension. Leaving SAPS early affects your retirement benefits, and the rules depend on your fund and service. We don't cover South African pension or tax rules. Get your position in writing and speak to an adviser who works with both countries before you resign.
Why SAPS officers consider the move
- ✓A permanent visa for you and your family if accepted.
- ✓A higher pay point than a new recruit.
- ✓Up to $20,000 relocation for serving or recent police.
- ✓Medicare and employer super from the start.
What makes it hard
- ✕Only one force could sponsor you.
- ✕IELTS 7 or equivalent in every band.
- ✕Rank doesn't transfer.
- ✕Family visa costs are yours.
Your step-by-step plan
In the order that saves you time and money.
- 1
Check the basic rules
Week 13+ years' full-time sworn service (24 months operational), under 54 at application, and time serving greater than time since leaving.
- 2
Sit a practice English test
Weeks 1–6Aim for 7 in every IELTS band or the equivalent. If you're well short, fix that before anything else.
- 3
Ask QPS about your service
Weeks 2–4Email the international recruiting team with your service history and duties and ask whether it's likely to be comparable.
- 4
Submit an expression of interest
Months 1–4Then the online panel interview and psych assessment, with fitness and medical arranged in your area.
- 5
Conditional offer and visa
Months 4–10Your offer sets your pay point. Sit the English test at an approved venue, then lodge the 186 with your family.
- 6
Move and train
Year 1PACE or the full recruit course in Queensland, then the First Year Constable program.

Frequently asked questions
Can South African police officers join the police in Australia?
Possibly, through Queensland. Its international route lets the QPS sponsor foreign police with 3+ years' comparable service on a permanent 186 visa, assessed case by case. No other Australian force has a pathway for SAPS officers: WA and SA list specific countries that don't include South Africa, and Victoria doesn't recognise service from outside Australia, NZ and the UK.
Do SAPS officers need an English test for Queensland Police?
Yes, in most cases. Queensland accepts a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, NZ or Ireland as proof of English; a South African passport isn't on the list. You'd need a Proficient English score, such as IELTS 7 in each band, taken at an approved venue for the visa. QPS doesn't pay for tests.
Is SAPS experience recognised in Australia?
Only by Queensland, if it judges your service comparable to its frontline policing. It then sets a higher pay point than a new recruit, based on length, recency and type of service. Rank doesn't transfer. Victoria says it doesn't recognise service outside Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and the other forces' programs don't cover South Africa.
Do metro police officers qualify?
Queensland doesn't publish a list of services, so it assesses municipal or metro police service like any other: on whether it's comparable sworn, frontline policing. It excludes security work and says transport and military police 'may be considered'. Ask the QPS international recruiting team about your service before you apply.
What visa would a South African police officer get?
If Queensland sponsors you, an Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa under its labour agreement, which gives permanent residence for you and any family included. Police officer isn't on the Home Affairs skilled occupation list, so there's no skilled independent visa for police. A registered migration agent can advise on other routes.
What is the age limit for South African officers?
For Queensland's international route you must be under 55 when you apply for the 186 visa, which QPS says means under 54 when you submit your recruitment application. If you get permanent residence another way and apply as a new recruit, most forces publish no upper age limit, though medical and fitness standards apply.
Can my family come with me?
Yes. Your partner and dependent children can be included in the 186 visa and must meet health and character requirements. Queensland pays for its own nomination and reimburses your visa fee after training, but not your family's visa costs. QPS warns the visa may not be granted if family members have significant health care costs.
Can South Africans join the AFP?
Not until you're an Australian citizen. The AFP requires Australian citizenship for police and Protective Service Officer roles. Citizenship normally follows several years of residence, including time as a permanent resident, under Home Affairs' rules. Some specialist roles in state forces also need a security clearance, which needs citizenship.
