The verdict for Canadian officers
Two forces, one with a named list of services.
Short answer
If you serve with the RCMP, the OPP, or the Toronto, Hamilton or Winnipeg police, SAPOL will consider you for a sponsored permanent visa. If you're from any other Canadian service, Queensland is your realistic sponsored route, assessed case by case. No other Australian force has a pathway for Canadian officers.
Canada is a newer source of recruits for Australian police than the UK or Ireland. SAPOL added five Canadian services to its Transition Program, and on 4 May 2026 the SA Government announced that its first recruit from the RCMP had been sworn in, among 28 international officers at that ceremony.

Queensland's international campaign also drew strong Canadian interest. When its labour agreement launched in 2023, AAP reported about 15,000 inquiries, with the most from the UK, Canada and South Africa. Queensland doesn't publish how many Canadians it has since hired.
This page is general information, not migration advice. Visa rules change, and your history, family and health all matter. Before you resign or pay for anything, talk to a registered migration agent (you can check registration with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority) or read the Home Affairs page for the visa yourself.
Which Canadian police services count?
SAPOL names five. Queensland names none and assesses everyone.
SAPOL's eligibility wording is precise: you must be a police officer in "Canada (Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Ontario Provincial Police, Toronto Police Service, Hamilton Police Service, and Winnipeg Police Service)". It says the list applies "at this stage", so it could grow.

Both forces want sworn, operational officers. Queensland says frontline experience means responding to incidents and engaging directly with the community, and that security work doesn't count. If you're a special constable, bylaw officer or provincial peace officer rather than a sworn police officer, ask before you apply.

WA's international program, the longest-running in Australia, is limited to the UK and Ireland (with NZ under its interstate and NZ stream). Victoria recognises prior service only from Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and says that's because of "significant differences in law, policies and procedures". The other forces' experienced-officer programs cover Australia and New Zealand only.

Source: SAPOL international applicants page, read 9 October 2026. Pay from SAPOL's published rates from the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2026.
The tightest rule is age: you must be no older than 44 years and 364 days when you lodge and pay for the visa. Given that recruitment takes at least a couple of months and visa processing more, a 44-year-old applicant may run out of time. Ask SAPOL early how long its current process is taking.
SAPOL counts only continuous, active service: unpaid leave of 14 days or more is excluded, and a break of more than 12 months doesn't count. Once you finish probation, you're appointed at the increment your service earns, from $86,125 to $102,491 on the Constable scale. See how to join SAPOL and the SA police salary guide.
SAPOL reimburses visa, medical and police clearance costs for your whole family, not just you.
Queensland: the route for every other Canadian service
Comparable policing, assessed case by case.
Queensland's labour agreement doesn't name countries. Instead, the QPS assesses whether your service is "comparable policing", using a comparable-policing form, your résumé and documents from your service. A Canadian passport counts as proof of English.
Who
- QPS international route
- Foreign nationals with 'comparable policing experience'; QPS doesn't publish a list of countries
Experience
- QPS international route
- At least 3 years' full-time policing (or the part-time equivalent), including at least 24 months operational; academy time counts for up to 12 months
Not counted
- QPS international route
- Security work; transport and military police 'may be considered'
English
- QPS international route
- A passport from the UK, USA, Canada, NZ or Ireland, or a Proficient English test score; QPS doesn't pay for tests
Age
- QPS international route
- Under 55 at ENS 186 visa application; in practice under 54 when you submit your recruitment application
Visa
- QPS international route
- ENS 186 under the QPS labour agreement; you must hold permanent residency before you start at the academy
Training
- QPS international route
- PACE (shortened course) or the mainstream recruit course, depending on how recent and relevant your experience is
Pay
- QPS international route
- A higher pay point than a new recruit, set case by case; qualifications don't add to it
Money

Source: QPS Recruiting international police recruitment page and FAQs, read 9 October 2026. QPS says the labour agreement allows 500 international recruits a year for five years from 2023. Its intake table hadn't been updated past May 2026 when we checked, so ask about current PACE dates.
Queensland's age limit is much higher than SAPOL's, which makes it the main option for Canadian officers aged 45 to 53. Depending on how recent and relevant your experience is, you'll do either the shortened PACE course or the full recruit course. Read our QPS joining guide and the Queensland police salary guide.
If neither route fits you
Over the age limit, a short career, or a service Queensland won't accept.
One fact shapes every route below: police officer isn't a skilled-visa occupation. When we searched the Home Affairs skilled occupation list for 'police' and 'detective' on 9 October 2026, it returned no results. So you can't get a points-tested skilled visa (such as the 189 or 190) as a police officer, and no Australian employer can sponsor you as one under the normal lists. The only employer-sponsored routes are the labour agreements that WA, SA and Queensland hold with the Australian Government.
If you don't meet SAPOL's or Queensland's terms, the realistic route is to get permanent residence another way, through a partner, another skilled occupation or a state nomination in a different field, and then apply as a new recruit. NSW, Victoria, Queensland, WA, SA, Tasmania and the NT all accept permanent residents as recruits. The AFP needs citizenship.

Recruit and first-year figures are each force's headline rates from our data files, taken from the force's agreement or official pay page. NSW has no recruit salary: the first stage of its Associate Degree is unpaid and the Academy stage pays a weekly rate. NSW's first-year figure includes its 11.5% loading; Queensland's recruit figure is 70% of Constable 1.1, calculated by us from the agreement; SA's recruit figure is the domestic cadet rate. Allowances, shift penalties and super come on top.
As a new recruit, your Canadian experience won't set your pay, but it will help at interview and in the job. Our guide to becoming a police officer in Australia covers every force's recruit process, and the eligibility guide covers age, licence and citizenship rules.

SA rates from 1 January 2026; Queensland rates from 1 July 2026 under the QPS Certified Agreement 2025. Queensland adds a 21% operational shift allowance for officers on operational shift rosters. Shift penalties and super come on top in both.
A SAPOL transition officer on $83,398 takes home about $2,546 a fortnight after 2026-27 Australian tax and the Medicare levy, by our calculation, before shift penalties. A Queensland officer on Constable 1.1 base ($78,505) takes home about $2,418 a fortnight before the shift allowance.
We haven't converted Canadian salaries, because exchange rates move and a straight conversion ignores tax, pension contributions and living costs. Compare take-home pay against rents in Adelaide or the Queensland district you'd likely be posted to.
Compare SA and Queensland pay
See recruit, constable, senior constable and sergeant pay in all eight forces side by side, with employer super.
The visa: ENS subclass 186
Permanent residence, nominated by the force.
Both SAPOL and the QPS nominate you for the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa under their labour agreements. It's permanent: you, your partner and dependent children arrive as permanent residents, with Medicare and the right to work and study. The age limits come from each force's labour agreement.
What the visa stage involves
- ✓ The force's nomination comes first; don't lodge until it tells you to
- ✓ Health checks for you and every family member on the application
- ✓ Police certificates, including from Canada
- ✓ Queensland: you must hold permanent residency before the academy starts
- ✓ Queensland reimburses only the main applicant's visa fee, after training
- ✓ SAPOL reimburses visa, medical and clearance costs for the family
For more on the 186 and how it compares with temporary visas, see our guide to Australian visas for police officers. Don't resign from your service until the visa is granted.
How your Canadian service and rank are recognised
Years count towards pay; rank doesn't carry over.
Your years of service are what Australian forces recognise, not your rank. SAPOL credits all continuous active service, capped at 7 years, to set your probation length and Constable increment. Former Sergeants and above can be appointed Senior Constable Increment 1 after probation. Queensland gives a higher pay point than a new recruit, but says qualifications and designations don't add to it.
Specialist designations don't transfer automatically. Queensland says detectives must first be appointed to a plain-clothes position, then apply for recognition of prior learning and to the Detective Application Board. Expect the same principle elsewhere: you prove yourself in general duties first.
Advantages for Canadian officers
- ✓Armed, community-facing policing is familiar.
- ✓A Canadian passport proves English in Queensland.
- ✓SAPOL covers family visa costs.
- ✓Permanent residence from day one.
What to weigh up
- ✕Only five services named by SAPOL.
- ✕SA's age limit is under 45.
- ✕No Medicare reciprocity before you're a permanent resident.
- ✕New state law, systems and probation again.
Healthcare, family and your Canadian pension
The practical side of the move.
Healthcare. Canada has no reciprocal health care agreement with Australia. Services Australia lists 11 countries, and Canada isn't among them. On a permanent 186 visa you can enrol in Medicare as a permanent resident, but hold insurance for any visit before your visa is granted.
Family. Your partner and dependent children can be included in the 186, and arrive with work and study rights. SAPOL reimburses their visa costs; Queensland doesn't. Schools are run by each state's education department, so check enrolment once you know your posting. Both forces post officers regionally, which matters for your partner's work.
Your pension. Leaving the RCMP or a provincial or municipal service affects your pension, and the rules differ by plan. We don't cover Canadian pension rules. Get a written statement of what you'd keep, and talk to a regulated adviser who understands both countries before you resign. Your Australian force will pay employer super on top of your salary.
General information only
This isn't financial or migration advice. A registered migration agent can check your visa eligibility, and your pension administrator can tell you what leaving early means for you.

Frequently asked questions
Can Canadian police officers join Australian police?
Yes, through two forces. SA Police accepts experienced officers from the RCMP, Ontario Provincial Police and the Toronto, Hamilton and Winnipeg police services and sponsors a permanent 186 visa. Queensland's international route assesses any service for 'comparable policing' experience, case by case. The other six jurisdictions have no route for Canadian officers.
Can RCMP officers transfer to Australia?
Not as a transfer, but RCMP officers can apply to SAPOL's Transition Program if they have at least 3 years' continuous active service in the last 5 and are under 45 when the visa is lodged. You'd do a 15-week course in Adelaide. SAPOL's first recruit from the RCMP was sworn in in May 2026, according to the SA Government.
Is my municipal police service accepted in Australia?
Only Toronto, Hamilton and Winnipeg are named by SAPOL. Officers from other municipal services, such as Vancouver, Calgary or Ottawa, aren't on SAPOL's list 'at this stage'. Queensland doesn't publish a country or service list and assesses comparable policing case by case, so it's the realistic route for unlisted services.
What visa do Canadian police need for Australia?
The forces that recruit Canadians nominate you for an Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa under their labour agreement, which gives permanent residence. Police officer isn't on the Home Affairs skilled occupation list, so you can't get a skilled independent visa as a police officer. A registered migration agent can advise on your circumstances.
Does Australia have reciprocal healthcare with Canada?
No. Services Australia lists 11 countries with reciprocal health care agreements, and Canada isn't one of them. If you arrive on a permanent 186 visa you can enrol in Medicare as a permanent resident, but you should hold private or travel cover for any trips before that, for example for assessments.
Do Canadian officers need an English test for Australian police?
Not for Queensland, which accepts a Canadian passport as proof of English. SAPOL's process for UK, Irish and Canadian applicants includes literacy testing. If you're a francophone officer, expect the written and interview stages to be in English, and Queensland may ask for a test score if concerns arise.
Will my Canadian rank transfer to Australia?
No force transfers rank directly. SAPOL credits 100% of continuous service, capped at 7 years, for Constable increments, and former Sergeants and above can be appointed Senior Constable after probation. Queensland sets a higher pay point than a new recruit case by case, based on your service.
Can a Canadian join the AFP?
Not until you're an Australian citizen. The AFP requires Australian citizenship for police and Protective Service Officer roles, and its Skilled Police Program, which needed Australian policing experience, was closed when we checked. Moving to SA or Queensland first and naturalising later is the realistic path.
